My 2 cents - I would love that photo if I was that woman!

Agreed. It's a great photo, tastefully done and I do not think it disrespects her at all.

But also, if she was so concerned with her privacy, then it's her responsibility to protect it. I do not think she would be showing such public displays of affection in such a public area if it was such a concern to her.

The other day, I was sitting on a bench waiting for the subway when all of a sudden I hear these really loud slurping noises right behind me. I turn around to see this couple not just kissing, but slurping pretty loudly. It was quite disturbing actually. Not only did they need a room but they also needed kissing lessons. But they obviously loved the attention because even when they noticed me turn around and stare at them, they continued and even knocked it up a notch.

If you want the general public to have a good association of a photographer, then I think it's our job to take photos that always respect our subjects. I personally feel Taylor has done this.

zoraak - while i can understand your concerns, i'm not sure how you can deduce the circumstances under which taylor produce that image... nor, would i suggest, can you read the mind of the woman in the image... i respect the approach you take to street photography and i believe that how other's approach it is their business and that there isn't a 'right or wrong' way to do it... dont worry too much about what the 'public' thinks about photographers... not something you can control... all you can do is be respectful to your subject, however that may manifest itself ...

personally i don't enjoy using lenses longer than 50mm (other than composed portraits)... but if it works for Taylor, then that's all that matters to him...

whether or you like or dislike is image is a personal matter...

i wish you good light..

There is definitely a right and wrong way to do photography. I also do care what people think , because if I'm photographing them I'm not doing so to fulfill some some sort of warped curiosity or feel good about myself or show off that I'm a photographer.

Amateur photographers should not be so sensitive otherwise they would never learn.

My initial critique was well-intentioned and i was trying to share a point of view other than the typical "greats shots" which is the automatic reply to any crappy picture posted on the Internet (understandably).

anyway, please don't mind me, I feel strongly about photography and i can be opinionated when it comes to discussing its ethics.

cheers,

Good point, I should have chosen my words more carefully. What I meant to say was this: When you're snapping away at someone legally, and they approach you and want to know why you're taking photos of them, or what you intend to use them for, how do you respond? Are you truthful? Do you tell them only what they need to know?

First of all if you take a single photo and move on, the likelihood of the scenario which you mentioned is quite unlikely. But of course standing there and shooting away at someone will definitely get you a response and a hostile one. so first of all, aim well, shoot and move on.

Anyway, if someone comes to you and asks why, first of all keep smiling be casual and tell them that you're an amateur photographer and describe to them what interested you in the shot. Be honest and friendly. Don't start by talking about your rights and other such nonsense. the issues of rights only arises if you're a photojournalist and doing a story where you have to photograph, for an amateur its foolish and unnecessary to get into arguments as such. photography is a privilege, not a right. so, always remember that.

also, if you photograph someone, and you think its a good one, get them to sign a model release form so you can publish that picture later on.

but then again, always remember that a candid shot is just a snapshot if does not "say" something to the viewer, so when you photograph always ask yourself, "what is it that you want to convey" and "how you want to convey it".

cheers,

I guess this image doesn't totally apply, given that that I definitely know the subject (as do many other people on this board), but I still really like it, and consider it a candid either way, given that it wasn't posed.

Good use of motion blur! How do you feel about shooting homeless people? Would you give them some money after taking their photo? And has any of them ever accosted you for taking their photo?

Thanks.

I very rarely do it (I don't think I've done it since I took these two about 2 years ago?).

Would I give them money after taking their picture? No, but I don't give them money anyway (I prefer donating to charities)

Have I been accosted? No, but like I said, I rarely do it.

How do I feel about doing it? To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum "Just because you could, doesn't mean you should", with the addendum that it doesn't mean you shouldn't. In short, I'm of a mixed opinion.

When I'm with friends and I'm sitting next or across from them, a candid always gives the best result, since you're not giving them time to pose or stiffen up. Even if they know I'm shooting, they don't know when :

A friend of mine actually knew the girl in this photo here:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/maelswarm/1559932081/" title="How's the book? by Taylor Zhou, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2082/1559932081_2e0622e1d4_b.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="How's the book?"></a>

and showed the photo to her. The girl's response was:
"These are so cool! I look so stoic.
I remember that day, too. Wearing those clothes, sitting in front of
Burwash. I don't remember anyone with a camera, though.
Wow. Thanks for sending them to me."

I've already posted the colour version.

I was shooting a friend's event/party at a bar/lounge a couple of weekends ago. Very low light so I took a test shot of the lamp shade in front of me. It's not until I reviewed the photos at home that I noticed the couple. Sometimes we get lucky.

Ooh, what a fun thread! Wish I'd found it sooner! Anyway, this is one of my favourite travel shots. I snapped it in Myanmar earlier this year. This elderly gentleman noticed us exploring a temple and offered to sit down with us and tell us the most beautiful sights in the Mandalay area. I managed to get a few shots while he was talking without him noticing. (Camera set on the table, viewscreen on, very carefully angled to get what I wanted.)

Not sure if animals count, saw a coyote recently, I originally thought it was a wolf. It was the only shot I could manage before it ran away into the woods.

Just went through all the posts and there are some amazing shots (ie. Taylor's and Ken's). At the same time, to me a lot of the others don't really qualify as "Candid". Some are more like street photography and others are more like scenery shots with a person in it. This is entirely a matter of personal opinion but I think candid should have a very clear subject that is a person (or more than one person), and the subject being not aware of the camera snapping the photo.

Here's one of mine, at the last Pedestrian Sunday @ Kensington

What you posted there falls under stage photography. and you cannot say that guy was unaware of any photographers in the audience. also there is a lady on the right of the picture which is looking at you and she has totally ruined the shot.

Lets not go into definitions and create more controversy in an already heated thread.

Interesting definition of Candid. IMHO If you are going to narrow the definition down that much its seems to me that your image is also not a candid, as a street performer and entertainers in general are very much aware that many eyes are upon them. The older lady in the background if she were the focus would be another matter.

BTW Nice shoot.

we don't need no stinkin definitions...but let's chill out and post interesting 'candid' images...

for whatever it's worth, my personal definition of candid (another word for 'snapshot') is an image of (typically) a person or people taken in an unstaged or undirected manner...

Let's just post photos what *you* consider as candid and stay on topic. If you believe that the photo isn't a candid, then that's fine, everybody has their own definition on what 'candid' is. If you feel compelled to discuss this further that's alright but please do it in another thread, several threads lately have been taking a tangent.

Speaking of candid, I consider this one fairly candid as my son was singing along to the Backyardigans (and I find it scary I know who they are ) when I snapped this.

There are some really great shot's in this thread.

This is quite a candid
I think another fellow Steve Shao took this shot in the Gay Parade this year. She is asking for $100 for a front shot.
Looks like nobody paid her and few got the back pict only

Candid or more like test shot in B&H last March for a snap test shot of Sigma eX 70-200APO just half stop from wide open . No flash of course. I should have got this lens which were $900. It is completely sold out now worldwide(Pentax mount with IS) and ebay sales has consistently been over $1200 US even if you can find one.

The original in here is mindboggling sharp. And the bokeh...

I have no clue if the Canon version is better. But this is no slouch
