So I'm thinking about (doing what I never thought I would do and) buying a tablet.
Any advice on buying a tablet for the purpose of showing work to clients and possibly photo editing ?

I recently got my asus tf101 for photo display with client and it worked really well, clients were really impressed. It can be better than photobook because you can constantly update your work.
As for tablet choice I'll suggest 10" as appose to 7" so your choices are Samsung, Asus, and iPad. In terms of IQ ipad3 is the highest, then samsung for more vibrant colour and last is asus. I went with asus simply because i like asus brand more.

Depends on your clients. First is how good do your images look on the screen. Second larger is better except if you don't have it with you because it was too large to pack. I'm made more new sales and contacts because my 7" is most often with me. lastly an HDMI output is handy when you want to hook the tablet up to a projector or large screen.

I think the best advice is to come up with a short list (based on reviews and specs you need) and then go to the store and try each out. Obviously it will be easy to try an ipad and they will have photos on it so you can see how the screen looks, etc. other models maybe more difficult as it can be hit or miss at electronics stores if they will have a working unit available.

I personally have the newest version of the iPad and love it, but I am also biased toward apple products, the screen on this thing is nothing short of fantastic and the colors are great, vibrant but still realistic. For photo editing I use either Nik's Snapseed or Apple's iPhoto. Not sure what options there are for the other brands.

At any rate there are very few duds out there and most of the tablets will do the job you want, it comes down to price/feature/performance for your needs.

Cheers,
J.
