I'd like to see spec's before I make a decision.

Yawn, my days of interest over any Canon/Nikon announcements have long past.

Can't wait for the Feb 8th announcement of the new pro Olympus camera, supposed to be a digital OM style camera!

interesting ... I'd like to see a comparison of 6400 ISO at 12mp vs. 36mp if that is true.

me too. We'll all see probably on Feb 7th if this is true. I cant see Nikon screwing up their high ISO performance haphazardly. 36MP would challenge some of the medium format cameras for large print work. Could be interesting for sure.

The 36MP sensor possibility does not surprise me, but the fact it's the Nikon D800 kinda does. Up to this moment, Nikon had not embraced the "high resolution" camera with the exception of the D3X. Maybe it's a conscious decision to finally take on the high res capability of the Sony a850/a900 and the Canon 5DII. I thought (and wish) the MP war was dead several times over now.

For what it's worth, I don't think there will be a problem with the latest pro grade Nikon lenses keeping up with such a sensor. Based on my experience seeing what the high grade ZA lenses do on the a900's sensor, and what I've heard/read of the Sony a77 and NEX 7's 24MP APS-C sensor.

36 woould be a huge jump for sure and file sizes would be immense. Id be happy if they just went to 24Mp range, but we'll find out soon i guess.

Is anybody taking a shot at what the price might be? I mean, if we're into rumors, we might as well speculate about that as well :)

http://www.nikonrumors.com had an estimated quote of 300,000.00 yen, which is about $4,000.00
For me (and countless others) this is a long awaited camera, which looks to be with mostly unnecessary high megapixel count, fairly slow fps and prohibitive price :(

If this is imminent, then I believe nothing is final and they may very well be open to tweaking or rewriting some features. Don't ask why I think/feel this is possible.

That's an outrageous price, if true. We'll see how it goes.

$4000 is a bit steep for this type of body, but based on spec's - not out of line completely. The D700 was $3000 when it was released - actually for a short period of time I believe it was upwards of $3400, and then it dropped down in price eventually.

i dont like how the replacement cameras seem to be creeping up in price from the previous versions.

I guess they are not afraid of the dreaded "iphone cameras" taking over the DSLR market ha ha

If this is true and it is a 36MP sensor, I don't see it as a replacement for the D700. I doubt they will be able to match the D700's high ISO performance at that pixel pitch. They would do well to keep the D700 around for a few years and replace it with a model using the D4 sensor or the like.

I don't see a problem 'matching' the current hi iso of the D700 (an old sensor vs the newer D800's). I would think it's a good sensor but it won't be able to go toe to toe with the D4 sensor for obvious reasons.

I never really heard a good explanation from the folks at 1366 Aerowood and I'm baffled at the specs that are floating out there.

I'll eat my hat if it comes close...

The brand new 16MP D4 sensor seems to be only a marginal improvement over the D3s sensor, which was 1 - 1.5 stops better than the D3/D700 sensor at the same resolution.

If the 36MP D800 can match any of those it will be a fearsome beast to behold...

Some leaked cropped samples from D800, but no side by side comparison:

I agree - different pixel pitch does not produce the same results - regardless of the generation of the sensor. Its physics.

hmmm, 36MP is a huge jump so ISO performance seems like it would take a hit.

However, bearing in mind that i shoot 95% of my shots at ISO 100 and i think i went up to ISO 400 a couple times, high ISO is probably not much a concern to me in reality, despite me wanting it anyway, he he

I think we're all talking about will the D800 noise levels be the same or better than the D700's at hi iso. I'm saying that they'll probably be as good if not better, regardless of the different sensor and it's densities and pitches which should be plain to everyone. We're also a few years on in technology and we know that rarely stands still ;) Perhaps 'matching' was the wrong term to use but I think that's a nit tbh.

Looks like we are in for an update and not only on the D700 front but also the D300s front. Both cameras are now officially listed on the Nikon Japan website as Discontinued:

I wonder. Some were saying the D7000 sort of took over the D300 range, but if there is a D400 and D800 both released, my camera is going to look like crap now! LOL
