Long story short, a friend of mine from out of town has tasked me with finding him a good copy of the 17-55 2.8 Nikon lens for the DX bodies. I'm a Canon shooter so I know absolutely nothing about Nikon's naming, nomenclature, acronyms, generations.... nothing.

Anyone care to give me a crash course on Nikon glass in general, and this lens in particular?

Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor DX 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF ED

You dont need a course.

This lens is their crop sensor equivalent of the 24-70 2.8.

The 17-55mm 2.8 is a beautiful lens and gives a great mid range for crop sensors. Get it. Unless he's willing to get the 24-70 instead and deal with the crop factor.

It also weighs a ton.

There is only 1 version of this lens so there is no need to worry about getting the wrong version - as far as I know - they are all made in Japan.

or try fleabay.

The 'equivalent' canon lens is the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS. I use quotes because the Nikon does not have IS/VR.

Thanks for the help folks. I figured the Nikon users would love to teach a mere Canon mortal a few things :D

Now, off to find a deal......

If you're looking used, don't settle for more than $1000. (even that is pushing it) a great deal would be $900-950.
