Nikon has announced the V1 enthusiast small sensor mirrorless camera. Built around what the company is calling a 'CX' format 10MP CMOS sensors, the cameras is part of the company's new Nikon 1 line. The V1 is intended as the higher-end model in the lineup and features magnesium allow construction and a 1.4M dot electronic viewfinder. Like the J1, in can shoot 1080i60 video and combines both phase detection and contrast detection autofocus. The 1" type sensor (13.2mm x 8.8mm) gives a 2.7x crop. The V1 kit with 10-30mm (27-81mm equiv.) lens will be $899.95 and will be available around October 20th. An adapter allowing the use of Nikon F-mount lenses will follow.

Nikon has announced the J1 small sensor mirrorless camera. The J1 is the more compact, less expensive model in the line up and, like the V1, features Hybrid autofocus (combining phase detection and contrast detection AF) that allows the camera to shoot at up to 10 frames-per-second with autofocus. It's built around a 1" type (13.2mm x 8.8mm) 10MP CMOS sensor, giving a 2.7x crop, which Nikon is calling 'CX' format. Like the V1, it can shoot 1080i60 video. The J1 kit with 10-30mm (27-81mm equiv.) lens will be $649.95. Again, the J1 is expected to arrive in the US around October 20th.

Kinda weird, that the sensor is so small, but then again, 4/3 probably wont take off with the average p&s consumer at a 1k+ price point, where at $649, this one might.

These are not enthusiast cameras - they are not for most people on this forum. They are for P&S upgraders.

You don't need to look at the specs - just look at the colour options - red, pink, white, grey, silver and black.

Anytime a camera comes in 5 different colours, you know its not targeted at the enthusiasts, no matter what they say on the news release.

Thanks for the news thericyip. I too am disappointed with the announcement...but what can you do. Maybe the iPhone 4s/5/6/7 will have iso6400 + raw capabilities to full-fill my gear lust :D

The other thing is with the simplicity of them along with the high speed AF and frame rate, these make a perfect upgrade for most P&S shooters who just don't care about DOF, sensor size or anything else.

I think most people who buy higher end P&S may look at these and love the fact that there's less delay in the shutter relative to P&S (biggest complaint I've heard from friends) and high frame rate and movie modes. Great for catching kids playing soccer or hockey, their perfect target audience. Most of these folk tend to be happy with their cell phone camera (iPhone anyone) so this is a step up from there and has a clear delineation from the P&S cameras.

My wife would love this, me, I'm pretty meh about it.

Hmm..... For a moment I thought I might be interested, but now I am not so sure. I think I'd rather spend my money on the Fuji x100.
