OK, this lens has been rolling around in my head as one i would like to get but it's super pricey. Does anyone actually have one and can share their experience(s) with it?

I'm hoping you can say how terrible it is so i can stop thinking about buying it! LOL

It's a great lens...focuses faster and more accurately then the D, specially in low light conditions. Color is warmer and consistent with my other G lenses. No regrets, but not necessarily worth it over the D for a hobbyist.

I am in the Canon side but would like to offer some advice:

Get it no questions, go all out you will not regret it (well maybe for the first few minutes after purchase but it quickly fades)

Get the largest aperture the 85mm has to offer! :)

Get the G! It's a great lens. Played with it on a D700 and it's real good.

I've tried out the G and currently own the D version. Optically, although the G has he "nano crystal" coating, I could not see a difference in the images. Focusing wise, it's only slightly faster than the D. It's quieter than the D (not that the D is loud mind you). I couldn't see the "value" in upgrading after playing with it. If you can afford it, go nuts otherwise, as it has been said, check out the Sigma or the D version :)

Cheers,
Dave

Dave, I found the G so much better in lowlight, at the same wedding reception. The D would try to grab focus and the G would lock fairly quickly.

With that said, the D is still an awesome lens and I happen to have one I need to sell. :-)
