If the Vendor insists on taking ID details, then it only makes sense to also take down the serial numbers of the bills and give a copy of both to the customer and have both parties sign it. Otherwise there is not way to verify that a particular customer made payment with those counterfeit bills.

Good point Ken. I would assume that is what would happen but having bought at Canada Computers in the past who knows what the real story is.

At the bank we definitely made note of the bills coming in which were counterfeit and we never assumed the customer was trying to pass them however the customer felt "gipped" because, in the end, they were out the money.

Dave

As an FYI: I was in WalMart yesterday afternoon. A woman made a purchase of an LG LCD TV. The total of her purchase was $628. She paid with credit card. The WalMart employee told her she needed to show ID with any purchase over $500.

Sounds like it's not just Downtown Camera or "mom & pop" operations that practice this type of check for purchases.

Cheers,
Dave

Checking the ID is one thing and it's ok, writing down the ID info is another thing and it's not ok.

What idiot would spend that kind of money at a Walmart? That is suspicious!
