Just noticed this week that Canadian major retailers have cut their prices on this lens by as much as $400 to $1999 from listed price of $2400.

Does anyone know if this price drop is temporary or Nikon has realized that the lens is overpriced at $2400? Any inside scoop on Nikon's pricing strategy?

Thanks.

I recalled that Sigma had to cut the price of its new 70-200mm OS not long ago by about $300 or something.

Perhaps competition forces Nikon to cut its price.

It's part of Henry's "Get Serious" promotion - the sale lasts until June 19th.

Just saw from Photoprice.ca that Aden Camera has lowered its price to beat Henrys by $26 on this lens.

It must be Aden's "Get Really Serious" promotion. :D

As PJs are slowly replaced by teenagers and their phones, naturally their lenses will get cheaper.

It was only a matter of time. They did the same thing with the VR1 after its popularity in sales died down. Which is when I got mine.

Nikon does this with most of their bodies and lenses. Its a waiting game. Do I pay full price now, or wait 6 months to a year.

Noted.

However, it didn't work with the D700. The price has gone UP over time!! Bugger!

B&H and Adorama still has it for $2449. Makes me think that this is all but permanent. If anyone is looking to buy one, do it now! If only I had the money to upgrade my 80-200. :(

The VRII was announced in July 2009 and reached store shelves around Nov / Dec 2009. The $2400 is the MSRP when released.

It is now June 2011 - almost 18 months after the shipping date - I don't think anyone paid the MSRP unless they pre-ordered when the lens was announced or within the first 2 months of the shipping date.

As for pricing strategy - there are 2 levels of pricing - wholesale and retail.

Wholesale is what the retailers paid Nikon, retail is what the retailers charge you and me. I don't think this price decrease is a wholesale change but maybe a retail change...in 18 months, most people who could afford this lens has already purchased it, now its the bargain hunters looking for deals.

Well, Nextag shows that US retailers have dropped their prices by $100 to $200.
