On Sunday, when I changed a lens, I lost all of the photos on my CF card. I found this program in another thread (thanks Tanner):

http://store.lexar.com/imagerescue3/index.cfm

The demo version appears to have found most of the missing files, although I don't have time to let it finish the scan this morning. I assume, though, that you have to pay for the program to actually get the files. I seem to remember reading somewhere that some memory cards come with an image recovery program, but I can't remember where I read that, or find it again easily. Does anyone know which cards have that, since I would rather spend the money on replacing the card than on just the software.

All Lexar professional memory cards come with that exact software. So that includes the 133x, 300x, 400x and 600x speed cards. I use the 300x CF cards and have not had a problem with any of mine (and considering I have a lot that I interchange very often I think it is pretty darn good.) I have also used the full version of the software to recover other brands of cards and card that i have accidentally deleted everything from and I haven't had any issues and all images have been recovered.

I have started the Recuva program, so I'll see what that finds. I do have a few of the Lexar cards (133x and 300x; not the card that lost the image). However, I no longer have the original receipts and/or packaging, so I probably will need to get a new card in order to get the software. I do want to replace this card anyway, since I won't trust it any more.

The Recuva program found 559 files, but the files were not recovered with the reason "The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid." I'll have to replace the memory card with a Lexar one tomorrow.

I want to know, did you lose the pictures because of the camera or the card?

How can I tell? The loss did happen when I changed lenses. I would like to know the cause too.

Was the camera powered on during the lens change?

I'm pretty sure I had turned the camera off before changing lenses. It was something I thought about as soon as I lost the photos, so I would have remembered if I had forgot to turn it off.

No luck with the Image Rescue software that came with the Lexar card. Even though it shows the thumbnails, when I tell it to Recover the files, I get files with a size of 0 bytes. If I try to open one of them in Windows Gallery, it can't open the picture, and it says 4.38 MB (0x0).
