Hmm...I have a dilemma.

I currently own 100mm macro L lens...and I want to get higher magnification than what I have

As I don't plan to buy 65mm, I'm thinking of buying a Close-Up lens. Does anyone have any experience with 250/500 Close-Up Lens on 100mm? Or would you rather recommend using extension tubes on the lens? (Gah...I sold my extension tubes few months ago :( )

I have the 100mm L and both the 500D and tubes, and tubes are the way to go if you really want to get in close. The 500D is best on longer lenses, but only gives a fractional increase in magnification whereas with the macro tubes, you can get several multiples.
you can also use a teleconverter to get additional magnification. a 1.4xTC will turn your 100mm into a 140mm, but with the same min-focusing distance meaning that everything is generally 1.4x larger.

Thanks fizbot.

Hmm...I think I'll go with 1.4x TC then (so I can use other than just macro).

I couldn't find 500D from ANY store (is it discontinued?).

ps. Is there any difference between Tamron 1.4x Pro vs Kenko 1.4x Pro300?

The Tameron and Kenko SEEM to be made by the same manufacturer to the same specs and just branded differently. I have the kenko which I can use the "tape trick" on (google "teleconverter tape trick") and have no problems using it with any of my glass including:
100mm f2.8L macro II
100-400
70-200 f2.8IS
500mm f4

I'm curious about trying macro as well. I would like to get the cheap extender linked in this thread but I'm not sure if it will fit my lens. I have a 70-200L f2.8 which I think is 88m diameter but the extenders on that site look smaller but I'm not sure. How can you tell?

70-200 2.8s are 77mm

Edit: At least the Canon 2.8s are. Sigma too.

Sorry I'm a little confused. Do the extenders go on the camera body and then you attach the lens? I guess in that case it doesn't matter what size the lens is right?

Extenders go on the bottom, where the lens mounts. There are filters you can get which mount on the uhhhh top, called macro filters.

Extenders/teleconverters are not cheap! Extension tubes and Close-up lens are much cheaper than the extenders.

I think you can get good macro shots with 70-200L using a Canon 500D Close-up lens, but good luck finding the 77mm version. (No camera store in toronto has the 77mm version. You can try 72mm version and use a step-down ring if you want...but I don't know if you will get vignetting).

I wouldn't recommend the extension tubes on >100mm lenses
