I saved about $350 just on the price of one piece of equipment buying from B&H as compared to buying local.
Savings may be even more as the Canadian distributor can

I saved over $200 when I ordered a lens from B&H but in reality I didn't really save because I ended up buying $200 worth of other merchandise too

One of the rumours from CR today is that there will be price increases for Canon USA starting in Feb 2011, mainly to combat the weaker dollar...

If it's true, there will be a mad rush of purchases made in the next two months from BH... at least for all the Canon gear anyway

Not a rumour anymore -- I've been leaked a copy of the new price list, and US prices are indeed to be up 6-10% for lenses. B&H/Adorama are already reflecting some of the higher prices.

Just caught the most resent peak in the Canadian dollar. ordering from B&H using purolator. After the dust cleared after the credit card exchange fees the Canadian dollar amount was less than the US dollar figure.

Good for you . If you pick the right credit card, there are not exchange fees. I have ordered from them lot's of times so far and have had a great experience. Yay CDN !

I have a USD credit card that needs to be paid in US dollars. I tend to pay 2.5% to 3% converting money at my local bank. I was told you can get the actual exchange rate if you are changing something like ten million dollars. I used to have ten million by I blew it on camera gear

Working for a bank means we have slightly better rates but I wish I saved my $10 mil instead.

First time trying out Purolator for a Domke F-5Xb - ordered March 16, shipped on St. Patrick's day.. arrived today - cheap shipping and speedy service and they (Purolator) didn't screw it up like UPS sometimes would do...

Cheers,
Dave

sigh.

just got charged $90 COD for a $210 item shipped from the US with UPS (not from B&H)... saddest thing is that even $210 + $20 shipping + $90 fees still worked to be cheaper than canadian pre-tax retail anywhere in the country...

oh well, anyhow, cheerful news this fedex :)

You should have uses USPS when shipping ground from USA to Canada.
There would be no brokerage fees (you may or may not have to pay HST depending on the product)

you can sometimes ask the companies if they will ship USPS for you instead of their usual UPS or FedEx.

Also just bought from B&H and my total on the credit card came in lower (Because of the Canadian dollar) then the invoice after exchange.

:P

If they charge HST, you WILL have to pay $7.50 in brokerage (that was what I had to pay last time, been a while since I now use the Purolator option).

Yes, USPS/Canada Post has $5 or $8 brokerage depending on shipping option (normal or express).

With the new shipping and the very strong Canadian dollar, I wonder if this has caused a big increase of used gear from B&H into Canada. There is nowhere near the selection there used to be, and there does not seem to be any changes to the used selection on Adorama. One would think that this same increase has taken place with new gear as well, so............

To the person who lurks here from Adorama please take note, I am sure any analysis of your sales will show a drop off in sales to Canada.

I dont know if that is true or not because I NEVER buy used gear that has glass or electronics in it :)

Nice, I love BHphotovideo. I used to live in CA and to ship across the country was dirt cheap. I'm glad they're recognizing that Canada is an important market to cater to. More vendors need to follow suit.

Oh well, just make sure your buzzer code is part of your delivery address. As a unionized employee of a certain 91-percent-government-owned corporation told me this morning, they "don't have time to look up your name in the list." My package is back in the warehouse until tomorrow.

Cheap is good. You get what you pay for, too.

Has anyone ordered with a US shipping address? I'm going to be in the States so I was thinking about picking up a B&H order from a friend's place...but the checkout indicates $0 sale tax (plus shipping) regardless of what state/zip code I tried. Is that too good to be true??
