OK, I bit the bullet and bought an EP-2 with 17mm lens. I was originally thinking about the 20mm lens but a deal came up for a package with the 17mm and I couldn't resist. It should be here in a few days, can't wait! Still not sure if I'm ready to give up my 40D for this, and not sure about composing via an LCD (or the optional EVF), but we'll see..

By the way, does anyone have a recommendation for a less expensive m43 portrait lens than the Panasonic 45mm? I'm sure it's a nice lens but it seems a bit pricey... I've heard the 50mm f2 macro for 4/3 would work with an adapter but will focus slowly so I might as well use a manual focus lens, but then I've been thinking that AF would be so much more convenient..

virtually any 50mm lens with a long focus throw will make a good portrait lens on m4/3

personally, I use a SMC Takumar 55/1.8, SMC Takumar 50/1.4 or Zeiss-Opton 50/1.5 (all with adapters)...

Thanks, I was thinking of using my Takumar 50/1.4 as well, but also more interested in something with AF...

By the way, why do you use all three lenses with similar focal length?

The 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 MkII is optimized for imager focusing and so focuses roughly as fast as the kit lenses, on the E-P2. The image quality with it is quite good, though you would obviously need an adaptor to use it on u4/3. The 50mm F2.0 Zuiko would be glacially slow to focus.

I also use a 50 summicron as well. It all depends on what I'm shooting.

The SMC Taks both focus closer than the Leica 50'cron and the Zeiss-Opton 50 (0.45 vs 0.7 and 1m respectively). The SMC 55 is sharper at 1.8 than the SMC 50/1.4 and I prefer the longer focus throw of the 55 (much easier to get critical focus when used close up). The SMC 55 is used primarily for shooting inanimate objects close up (basically my macro set up), the SMC 50/1.4 is used primarily for colour portraits - less contrasty than the 50'cron but less colour fringing than the Z-O. The Z-O has some fringing but it's my preferred lens for B&W portraits.

The 50'cron is sharp at every aperture and at all focus distances (the SMC 50/1.4 loses resolving power at distances past 5-10 meters) however the focus throw is shorter than the SLR lenses so not optimal for close up work where fine focus control is necessary.

I own a bunch of 50mm lens (135 film equivalent in 6x6 and 4x5). The 50mm FOV is my preferred focal length - I only own one lens in the other focal lengths - (24, 35 and 80 equivalent in 4x5).

Thanks Rob, is there a site that summarizes which 4/3 lenses I can use on the E-P2 with reasonable focusing speed? So far I've been searching lenses one by one to see which might work, but that is very time-consuming...

WOW, that's a very detailed knowledge of the specifics of those lenses!

Any of the lenses on this page, that are listed as "CDAF Enabled", will autofocus with reasonable speed on the u4/3 cameras.

http://www.biofos.com/esystem/index.html

... and native u4/3 lenses, of course.

If we have another 4/3 and u4/3 meet in the near future, then you're welcome to try out my 14-54 MkII for 4/3. I also have the 40-150 MkII for 4/3, which is optimized for CDAF focusing.

Hi Rob, this doesn't really help me at all. I need my girlfriend's kids to stop being whiny. Where is the link to that problem?

LOL.

I could steer you to that information, but be sure that you really want it. Remember; polygamy can be either Polygynous OR Polyandrous. Do you want to start giving her ideas? ;)

OK, before we all end up going to h*ll, here's a link actually pertaining to m4/3. Someone modified a couple fixed-lens Yashica rangefinders so he could use the lenses on m4/3:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/xy9z/46705 ... 833920480/

All I can say is WOW. I might even try that, as I've got a couple old Minolta RF's in a box somewhere...

It would mount but you don't have AF. You can google to see a version which lets you control aperture, but still no AF.

You're much better off getting NEX plus the sony alpha adapter to use with Minolta AF lenses.

i found a good deal on the Olympus E-P1 from Henry's with the kit lens 14-42mm. i will be mostly using it for daily haul so i'm sure the kit lens is fine but i have a Minolta 50mm F1.7 that i want to use that's why i ask. but i've also now found that there's an adapter for Canon EF lens to Micro 4/3. i might go that route since i shoot Canon.

thanks for the response.

As someone has mentioned the Canon adapter has no AF as well, although there seems to be a version that has its own aperture blades. A lot of people end up using manual lenses because they have an aperture dial and are built to manual focus more smoothly. Or you can pick from selected 4/3 lenses which retain some auto functionality with the Olympus/Panasonic adapters.

Does this EF->M43 adapter have aperture control? It's only in the past week that I've seen an EF->NEX adapter with aperture control, and only in the prototype stages.
