I've been looking through the manual, but I'm wondering if anyone can confirm whether the AF assist on the 580 can be used without the flash firing? The custom functions chart doesn't seem to indicate anything of the sort, but maybe I'm not reading it carefully enough :S

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

AF assist is on by default when your AF mode is ONE SHOT or AI FOCUS.

You have to disable flash firing in your flash settings on camera, not on the flash.

Yep there is a AF assist option in the camera menus, setting it External only won't alarm your subjects a headlight and deer kind of look lol
