i just got off the phone with a Canon tech guy and he hasn't gotten the memo yet about this. he said that the standard "repair" starts at $219 and will take 10 business days.

i wouldn't mind getting the modification but i don't know if i can live without having my only camera for 10 days.

Looks like a good feature for landscape/studio application. If it's a forced lock (you can't disengage it to work like it does now) then I don't think it would be beneficial for street/sports shooters, where you sometimes need to flip the camera to a different mode in a sec

the problem i have with the old dial on the 7D is, when i turn off or on quickly, sometimes i end up in B or Av instead of M. I turn my 7D off during video jobs to conserve battery.

I think the lock button is a great idea, it is for the 60D.

Sony/Konica Minolta's 7D had it.

Thank god! It's about time! If it's a split second you need to switch from one mode to another chances are you've already missed the shot. How much time do you need to change the settings with the dials after you've changed modes? When I'm shooting sports, the only times I've had to switch modes was when I wanted to get creative. I've lost track of how many times I've accidentally bumped the mode button on my 5D MKII.

ah, the perks of the d300/d700/d3. i still never understood why such high-end canon cameras had such low-end features and preset availabilities (re: specifically talking about the dial haha).

I was told that Canon kept the dial to keep it "idiot" proof for newbies etc. I don't see many beginners buying the 5D MKII. Wasn't the 5D MKII and 7D geared more towards the advanced to pro market?

Maybe Nikon users are smarter in figuring out how to use buttons instead of a knob? :P

Same here, i've bumped into the dial several times and if I'm not careful enough looking at the settings in the viewfinder then ooops. At least with the old 1DMrkII bodies, changing modes require the use of both hands LOL.

I do  does it count when people don't know what aperture is and how to change it on their 5D mkII?

I've never experienced my mode dial ever changing on me... but as a streetshooter, the extra button is kinda useless.. in fact.. it's more annoying.

I've had the dial change on me several times. Being pushed and pulled in a cramped bag, hauled over all sorts of terrain and general use can move an exposed dial like that pretty easily. Unless you walk around holding your camera like an egg. Since I almost always want mine in M and expect it to be there after being handled however it was I will eventually get one. $100+ though?! Jesus.

Ahhh, thanks. I didn't see an email from CPS so I just looked at my account and sure enough, email notifications were turned off. A few mins after enabling notifications I got the email. Looks like my allocated Christmas gifts budget just went down $110. :P

Sent my 5D MKII last week Thurs for the dial upgrade and it came back today. Not much effort is required to depress the button. Too bad it's something that should have been done from the beginning.
