Wait, we have to go to Kipling warehouse (in GTA) to pickup if we miss delivery? No, 2nd chance? We can call to re-direct to different address, right?

Thanks.

In Richmond Hill if I miss a Purolator delivery they bring the package to the nearest Purolator Store at Yonge St. north of Elgin Mills. I've always had a pleasant experience with Purolator .. can't say the same for UPS.

One could always send it to their office if they work at one. The B+H billto/ship to: is flawless.

Not a huge saving but I saved about 35% on buying film plus they have a bigger selection.

Yes, you can redirect. I've done this several times.

You may have to call them to make the order, outside of the US, billing and shipping address have to be the same when ordering online.
Billing in Canada and shipping to US is OK, I have done it may times but billing and shipping to different address in Canada can't be done or I assume it can't be done based on the note in the address and credit card setup checkout page. I suspect if you have ordered from them in the past you can talk them into it over the phone.

Quoted from that page
"Note: You can only select a different shipping address when shipping to the USA. "

When I did the bill to/ship to: My bill to was Canada and the ship to was USA - so you may very well be right.

I just put in an order for the fz40 this morning. There is no duty on cameras, but the HST calculations showed about 50 cents more than it should.

I am also looking to buy the 5d with 2 lenses soon, so I put them in my cart to calculate the total cost - over $5000. The duty + HST came out to be about $12.00 more than it should. I understand there should be no duty, so I don't understand why its $12.00 more.

Exchange rate difference?

13% of US$5000 is US$650.

But Canadian customs probably calculates 13% of C$5100 which is C$663. About a $13 difference.

I think Freestylephoto is still cheaper for film and darkroom supplies, but I'll use b&h for lens purchases from now on.

Everything calculated on their site is in USD. BH does all the calculations, not Canadian customs. Here's the total I got from their site in USD:

SubTotal: $5,648.00

Duties & Tax : $756.77 (16.55 duty?)

Shipping: $46.02
Order Total: $6,450.79

Should be $6434.24

just press the little :?: sign next to the duties/taxes, you'll find out. They charge some fees, I suspect it could cover the Purolator brokerage charge or something, I don't care you still save a lot

Took a peak. Disbursements ... I guess its not part of the shipping fee. Must be paying for something else to get the package out the door.

thanks.

Disbursements are a form of brokerage fee charged by the shipping company, and for Purolator are 3% of the tax/duty due at time of purchase.

It's a "money handling fee" that Purolator charges you, because they charge you duty/tax and have to remit ("disburse") that money to the Canadian government.

Unfortunate that the B&H shipping option is not totally brokerage fee, but at least the S&H cost + brokerage is still very much less than paying for the brokerage-free UPS Expedited. And at least it's declared up front!

But can you trust Purolator with more expensive or fragile items, say a lens?

You can ask that of any shipping company.

But with the rates being so much cheaper, where are corners being cut?

Why do you think corners are being cut? Maybe some companies just like jacking up the rates.

How good is purolators online tracking, and is a signature required?

the actual choice of the carrier is the weakest link in the B&H chain. purolator is easily the worst shipping company i've ever dealt with (and i have shipped a lot)

their tracking is reasonably detailed, but the messages can appear online several hours after their timestamp--completely useless for monitoring the actual delivery. combined with their horrible delivery practices ("we don't leave notices of delivery to protect your privacy" - !!!) it's a flip of the coin whether you'll get it on time (most of the time i saw "HH:MM delivery attempt failed" when i was waiting at the door precisely at HH:MM; if the truck passed by at all, it didn't even slow down). better plan for a trip to the kipling warehouse every time

yes, signature is required

Been tracking my delivery, just saw that it got delivered 1hr ago. Seemed pretty close to realtime.

Darn it, B&H also carries Onkyo audio equipment, MUCH cheaper than stores here in Canada, even after duties/taxes/shipping... hmmmm.

How much Onkyo do you need? Didn't you pick some up around this time last year? LOL

I was thinking of picking up a lens in New York, but now I'm thinking I might as well just order it online and have it delivered.

It was more like earlier this year I think, ended up getting a Yamaha instead. Onkyo for the workroom, my existing amp is taking up way too much space on the desk.

Alas, J&R, B&H, etc., Onkyo won't let them ship their stuff to Canada, grrrrr... just over $500CDN including everything, while it's $730 from a store in Canada before anything!!
