Something went terribly wrong with my Ipad screen last week.... and I had all kinds of horrible streaks and colour bars appear.

Went to the Apple store at the Eaton Centre after work today, and they took a quick look, did a quick diagnostic on the unit, and replaced it with a new one right there an then! Wow..... I so thought my goose was cooked, and I would end up having to buy a replacement.

Thank you Apple.

Yep.... the first one was because of defective wifi and bluetooth reception.

Two replacements, I wouldn't really consider that a +1. More like a -2.

did they move all your stuff over to the new one, or just give you a new one in a box and you had to re-configure everything up later? just curious.

They ask you to do a recent backup before coming to the store. Then they have you erase the content there and then in store. Then they bring out the new unit, sign the paperwork. Bring it home, plug it into iTunes, and do the new backup from the previous data. It takes a bit to transfer my 17 gigs of music and video. All good.

I had to reset the network info, as I couldn't get wifi working at first. All good now.

The Bob Marley over top is a little out of place but it's a good collection of clips from the Attack of the Killer App episode which is must see.

to add to the good customer experience database, I got my macbookpro replaced when it had 3 faults within the years of warranty I had (I bought applecare). Since my model was no longer in production, I got a recent model for free.

yayy apple.

about 300, IIRC.

Yes, I am aware that i practically paid for the repairs/replacement, but I think the message here is that there are at least some mechanism in place to ensure customer satisfaction.

To be sure, I don't know what the major PC makers are doing, but I get the impression that especially for outfits like Dell, the modus operandi is to sell as cheaply as possible, so that replacements are not so painful.

speaks volumes of the current state of customer service when a standard warranty issue on a younger than 1 year old device is praised for going above and beyond.

I think it says less about Apple (the cost of a one year warranty is embedded in the price of each new device - as is a fraction of their rental costs for their beautiful stores ;p) and more about the utter lack of consumer satisfaction with many of the alternatives.

Apple excels at customer service - something that is more and more necessary given that the quality control on their newer devices has decline with their popularity.

if a product needs to be fixed after you bought it, its not a good product. I understand there might be lemons or outliers, but still not THAT many...

I haven't heard too many problems with iPads being replaced so not sure what you mean by THAT many.

Says the guy with a GTR in his avatar.

How many transmissions did they have to replace on those things because of the poorly designed launch-control?

Nothing in this thread is statistically significant enough to come to the conclusion that any of the products discussed are failing at a rate that's above the industry average.

Let's face it, some products will fail regardless of the QA that goes into it. That's the reality with any electronics devices. The important thing is how the manufacturer deals with the issue when that happens.

I see mac as an innovative corporation but with products that have been obviously over-hyped, and with too much control over replaceable/upgradable parts - and a premium cost-

For the less money I can get 30-50% more performance and perhaps 80% more software, now do not forget the unlimited upgrading capabilities.
In the end, after 3/5 years the motherboard will be replaced with a new set of hardware, just like a mac. Oh sorry no... if I own a mac, that's it, I'm stuck with my hardware until I can afford to buy a new one.

oh for Pete's sake why do people call Apple "Mac"?

Sheesh. It's Apple. The Macintosh is one of their computers. And I'm not going to go into the further misconceptions in Gerardo's post.

Anyway.

Buddy of mine at work went on a trip and his wife did the packing. For some reason she felt it was a good idea to put his 64Gb iPad 3G in with a Tupperware container filled with tomato soup. Of course the container opened during travel and the iPad was soaked with sticky tomato soup.

Long story short she took it to the Apple store and she explained the situation truthfully. They handed her a replacement, free of charge.

+1 Apple!

Thank you for that story ---- basically what happened to mine -- it was 2am, I was done a VERY long day at work, and was loading equipment into my van for the next day. I didn't realize - because I was so very tired that I left the ipad sitting on the back of the van, and went to shut the tailgate door - it wouldn't close, so I slammed it, and it still wouldn't close. This is when I realized that there had to be something blocking it. It was my 64gb Ipad. Yikes! The screen was screwed up - had a large white bar, and a number of coloured bars running through the display, you could still see things in the background, but it was mostly done for.

Took it to the apple store -- told them that my screen was screwed up, and that I was beside myself because I love my ipad. They replaced it free of charge with a new one within 5 minutes. Now that is service! And I was thrilled not to have to pay for a new one, or repair.

On that note, I'd be far more impressed with the iPad if it were waterproof. I could sit in the tub and look at ... stuff.
