just wondering what all your thoughts were regarding these two lenses:

Sigma 30mm 1.4 vs Canon 35mm 1.4

i'm planning to pair it with my 7D :0

i know they are in pretty difference price classes, but i'm game for whatever will suit me the best :)

oh... i used to use a 50mm 1.4 on a 5D, so basically just wanting an equivalent in terms of focal length & speed on my 7D :)

i know the siggie will be 48mm and the canon would be around 56mm. i'm fine with that.

I did a similar thread a few months ago look it up for people opinions. My personal opinion after owning both (how's that for indecisive and stupidity) is that if you own a crop sensor: grab the sigma. Great optical quality, AF is a bit noisy 10 year warranty. Do I notice a big IQ difference? Not really, I'm not a pro just a Joe. (Used on a T1I). I've moved over to Nikon now and sold the Canon L with the GF taking the Sigma.

I did find a bit of a focusing issue with the Sigma(Front focus) but with micro adjust you will be fine with your 7D. I sent it to Sigma/Gentec and it was back within two weeks.

With the Canon, it

I used a 35L on the Canon XTi and got great results. Once I got a 5D, it was even better! This is a lens purchase you will never regret.

You probably know this already, but the Sigma 30mm is crop only, where the 35L works on both crop and FF.

I'm currently using the 35L on a 7D. It's my everyday lens, always in the bag. However, I feel I'm not using this lens to its full capabilities. For one thing, you get a 56mm FOV but you still have the magnification of a 35mm, so background objects are smaller versus 50mm on a FF. I hope I wrote that correctly.

I need a FF body. Time for a 5D2 :D

Even without FF, the 35L is BOMB.

I'm sure the L is nice, but for the money the 30mm sigma is the better deal $ for performance. I had one for about a year and loved it. No issues with focus or anything, crazy. Sharp. Great bokeh. Only sold it to go FF.

Much has been said already...but I was in the same boat, and the price / performance ratio pointed to the Sigma.

The thought of moving to FF is ALWAYS going to be there, but only you can answer if your funds allow you to do that anytime soon.

Moreover, we all know how well the resell value is on lenses, especially with Sigma due to their longer warranty.

I ended up with the Sigma 30mm on my 7d and love it. If someone wanted to hand over the Canon 35mm L.... thats an entirely different story.

If you go full frame just sell the sigma. The 30 1.4 was one of the easiest lens to sell I have ever listed. Sold quick and i got exactly what I paid for it a year earlier(used).
