For a message on another forum I had to create an image of what a range finder was (not to be confused with a rangefinder camera), which I used to use on top of my Agfa Isolette.

Since people are starting threads about the latest gadget, how about some old gadgets people use but they no longer do, or any photographic antiques they used to or still use.

Here's the range finder for a start:

Yes that's an obvious part of the gadget but what is it used for, that is the question.

It's been almost a month, and nobody has an idea or a guess.

Basically this just a device to shift the lens axes by 50mm to correct for parallax error. Similar to a cranked tripod column, but effective with tripod heads at any angle.

http://www.btinternet.com/~g.a.patterso ... faq-6.html

It's attached between the tripod head and the camera so the camera can be raised by the distance between the 2 lenses in the Mamiya TLR this corrects for the parallax between the viewing lens and the lower photo taking lens. it is useful for closeups and macros

How about you post the next object up for identification, to keep this little game going?
