So I finally talked myself into getting a monitor to edit with since my 13" macbook is just not cutting it ... I know theres a huge buzz about the dells .. Is there anyone else I can look at? I dont have a cc so ordering one is a pain... I'm looking to keep it at around 200 since I'm poor... Anything you guys could suggest? I was looking up bestbuy and future shop .. All these brands Ive never heard of like calypso and what not .. Any suggestions?

What would I be looking for in a good monitor??

is this good? lmao .. I'm such a noob

The reason why people like Dells is the type of monitor technology SOME of their monitors use...those are the monitors being discussed...not all Dells use this though.

To elaborate. 98% of the monitors sold in stores are the cheapest of the cheap...they use TN (twisted nematic) technology. They only show 6 bits of each sRGB colour (6bits red, 6bits green, 6 bits blue), rather than the full 8 bits. Doing this makes the monitors faster which is good for gaming and movies, but not so good for photography as losing those two bits equals losing 200,000+ shades of colour; 46,656 with 6 bit instead of 262,144 with 8 bit.

The specific Dells that get mentioned use a more expensive monitor technology called IPS (In-plane switching). These aren't usually sold in the FutureShops because the average person would complain about ghosting from watching fast action movies or games on their monitor. Photographers on the other hand love these because they show ALL of the sRGB colour space...but they cost more money, and are harder to find.

The top of the line would be a wide gamut monitor that shows most if not all of the AdobeRGB colour space.

no, get the bigger one. You'll appreciate the extra real estate in doing fine detail editing.

Get the Dell when it goes on sale. I just got the Dell U2410 a few months back and DAMN! I love this thing.the 23 or the 22 are both also good from what I have read but I really appreciate the extra real estate with my 24"

EDIT: Look at this one too as it currently on sale and a 23"

I had some bad luck with the Dell U2410 - I bought it as soon as it came out and it had this reddish colour cast that not even the Spyder3 could get rid of. After viewing the Dell forums it was clear to me that I was not the only one with this problem, so I exchanged it for 2 2209WA monitors (my primary use is data analysis, where dual-monitors are handy).

It's possible Dell has revised the U2410 (I haven't checked) or that, as with other some other Dell LCDs, there is basically a "panel lottery" as to who gets a gem (s.poborsa) or a lemon (i.e. moi).

I like my 2209WA's, they are easy on the eyes for general work and calibrate well with the Spyder. One would be too small for photo work but that's why I'm happy with two :) Also, they are NOT wide gamut monitors, which makes my workflow (sRGB) easier. However, if you can colour manage an AdobeRGB (or wider) workflow, then you'll miss that on the 2209WA.

I use the 2209WA and I really like it but since it sits on my desk I don't use it very often. I find I do most of my editing on my laptop. Hmm .. should I sell it .. I dunno.

i dont know how you guys are editing on your laptops. Isn't the screen too small and you get glare from the screen?

I suppose it depends on your laptop. I don't get any glare on mine and find the size okay when on my lap (17inch). Not ideal for sure but definitely usable.

you can get laptops with matte screens but most are glossy which is lousy for staring for long time

There was recently a 26" NEC IPS monitor on the Buy/Sell forum at an insane price used. These are top of the line monitors.

When I started photo editing on the computer (back when the Mac was black&white, and the PC could only display four colours, hence I didn't use either of those, not to mention Photoshop didn't exist) most monitors were 12-14 inch.

You're just spoiled with larger monitors...actually a 15" laptop screen is a pretty decent size, and my IPS desktop monitor is only a 20"...any larger and you're using peripheral vision.

Working on a larger monitor is easier on the eyes IMO.

It's all personal preference. I used to edit on large monitors, but I was tired of having to move my eyes/head so much.
