120 mp...AND 9.5 frames a second...I'd run out of memory on my computer and external drives in the first 30 minutes...

Thats about 6,650mb every second in a 16bit capture mode (based on double the pixel count of a P 65+). Soooooo, it may be a while before processors and memory cards make this even remotely possible.

well, the medium formats are already in the 65MP range so it's not crazy. Computers get faster all the time so hopefully they will keep pace too!

It would be nice to crop down and not lose too much detail.

120MP seems crazy to us now but there are those that thought we would never need more than 640K. How many of you are old enough to get that reference?

DOS was designed to only address up to 640K of RAM as the original designers did not forsee ever needing more than that, or so it goes...

I remember adding a 10Mb (that is M B not G B) hard drive and freaking out at how many 360k floppies that would hold. I thought I would never need a bigger hard drive.

120 MP seems outragous to us today, but already I could see this coming to mainstream in steps. Next gen 1ds would then be able to offer 60+Mp like medium format but in a DSLR format, Maybe at 9K instead of 40K

I worked at a college bookstore in the 80's in Montreal that had 8" floppies to backup the IBM midrange box - I don't know how big they were but a few of them held all the stores accounting data.

The biggest impediment I see in things getting so much bigger, is the size of the bus or network between mediums. If you have a Terabyte of data and you want to replicate it, it takes forever. Technologies like eSATA are trying to address this and USB 3.x of course but I have yet to see these widely adopted.

DOS 5.0 was luxury at 16bit - DOS 3.3 was 8bit and could only see 32MB partitions (becasue you would never need more than that on one partition!!!).

I used to administer OS/2 1.3 (The collaboration between Microsoft and IBM) on LAN Manager - this was the pre-NT platform for servers.

Sorry, I had to stop typing for a second to wipe a sentimental tear from my eye ;)

Back to OP. Does the 1DM4 use APS-H sized sensor?

I should have bought a 1Dmk4 instead of 5Dmk2, 1.3x crop doesn't seem so bad now.

It likely equates to 150-180MP on your next rig, the 5D Mk.3

yeah, i remember the 640k limit with Extended RAM. I bought 4Mb of RAM to play a hockey game and it costs like $300 for 4Mb.

I also recall my Vic 20 and upgrading it with 16k of ram. Wow.
