So many apps so little time! I thought it might be interesting to talk about apps that we find useful for photography. Especially since you can't try before you buy, I thought we could benefit from each others experience.

In addition to a general description please list:

Price
Internet connection needed? Y/N
Special features
How you use it
Suggestions for improvement

An app I'm really loving right now is the Audubon Guides. I got the combined version with birds, mammals, trees & wildflowers, but you can buy them separately if you wish.

Cost: ~$39.99
No Internet connection needed
Special features include, birdsong, ability to add your own photos and check off species you've seen, seasonal species range maps.

This is great in the field. No heavy book guides to carry. I use this all the time when I'm out. Bird identification is particularly useful. Now I need to find one for rocks and fossils.

I guess you didn't see my thread.... http://tpmg.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16267

I was using Photogene until I started having problems with wifi, and I reset my network settings which caused the entire Ipad to restart, and I lost that app because it hadn't been backed up. Still have problems with wifi .... now its not working AT ALL! I am going to Best buy where I got it today to deal with this problem.

No I didn't see that thread, but I was inspired by your earlier question about photogene and photo editors. I thought it would be good to talk about any useful tool, gps, maps, nature guides moodboards etc, in addition to editors.

great news today... I got a replacement Ipad this morning. It seems like my ipad was suffering from hardware failure - faulty wifi circuit or something?

That's a relief! Did you get the extra apple care program?

I finally got my hands on a camera connection kit @ Yorkdale Mall.

I'm sorry, I haven't tried these yet because I don't have an iPad (yet), but know a few who have and said they worked well for them.

Just curious if anyone here tried any of these?

I've seen a good review of this on Adorama TV http://www.adorama.com/alc/article/iRelease-AdoramaTV

Not familiar with the others.

That's Photoshop Express, not Elements. More limited but still useful.

There is also a free version of iRelease (lite) which I have tried.

it would be really handy if there was an app that could control a canon camera!

Only works if it is tethered with a computer.

Although Canon publishes an SDK (Software Development Kit) it only supports Windows and Apple desktops only. No Linux nor any mobile OS.

Until Canon decides to include support for mobile OSes no mobile apps for Canon cameras.

I've also downloaded PS Express. It's fun to play with. Some of the settings are sticky though. I had a lot of trouble trying to switch from one border treatment to the other. I often had to go out of the menu and come back in. Annoying.

I use photogene, it's pretty much all I need for quick edits "in the field" and I can send the file directly to friends that want them sooner rather than later.

If one thing I can share with you guys/gals that use CF cards, I've found a really cheap CF reader that can plug directly into the Apple Ipad USB camera kit! It's from Deal Extreme, and the website looks a bit sketch. I got two from them this week (about 3-4 weeks shipping as they're from Hong Kong) but it's cheap and totally works. Beats having to plug in a powered CF card reader.

It's called the SSK All In 1 Card reader http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5817

Plugged in both and they work very well...$6! Hope this helps

The Photographer's Ephemeris is available as an iPod/iPhone app. The App Store says it is compatible with iPad, but The Photographer's Ephemeris web site also says they are working on an iPad version.

It can be used without a connection, but you lose some features (including maps). It does not use the terrain maps like the desktop version.

The search function is weak. When you enter the name of a location it does not offer options just jumps to the location it thinks you mean. I also find the search feature biased to US locations. For example enter Algonquin Park and it takes you to Norfolk unless you include Ontario in the search criteria.

It is easy to use and very handy. Cost is $9.

The apple camera connection kit, includes a USB adapter. You can connect it via a cable directly to your camera for downloading images from a CF card. This method has worked well for me.

No, but I have been working with an HD video editing app -- which works quite well. I am hoping to edit my "Vignette's Of the EX" video on the pad.

I've used "Photographers Contract Maker" as well as "Easy Release". Both are fairly good but I would lean towards "Easy Release". Getting a release ready and signed is quicker and easier with "Easy Release" than PCM. The annoying things about these apps is creating your own releases takes some time as you have to copy/paste from other sources or type it out by hand. You can't upload a document for it to use.
