Me again....
I don't understand why people are putting big fat heavy lenses on these bodies with the aid of converters. In my mind this makes the camera less-than-compact.
And these are lenses that won't AF, lenses that will only shoot wide open.
Wouldn't the lens work better on the DSLR it was bought for?

Is there a reason for this or is it just fun gearheadism run amok?

I'm still confused what all the fuss is about....

Given that m4/3 provides the greatest opportunity to use legacy glass this is probably a good place to post this tid bit. Adobe with the release of CS5 and the coming LR3, have provided the means of user created lens profiles to use with the lens correction functions in these programs.

I have been playing around with the RAW noise reduction part of ACR 6.0 in CS5 for the high ISO setting on my Canon G9. 1600 now becomes a useful setting for well over half of any photo situation as opposed to totally useless, and the max practical setting of 400 moves up to 800 IMHO. Basicly ACR 6 makes the G9 a new camera. I'm thinking that this noise reduction applied to the high speed setting on the M4/3 will be real sweet, and give any high speed dslr setting envy a real good kick in the jollies.

Do you mean Hasselblad lens to M4/3? Re 500c/m.

I had a CZ Hasselblad to EOS adapter, so if you had CZ lenses you could use that adapter and then EOS-M4/3 I assume.

I wish I could have brainfarts of forgetting I have a Hassey. As it is, the only way I can mistaken owning a Hassey is if someone beats me over the head with a bat repeatability then brainwashing me while I'm in pain and fuzzy headed, to believe I can afford a hassey.

What kind of card is everyone using for their M4/3?

I just got a GF1 and looking to purchase a card for it.

I intend to do a lot of video recording of my kids with it.

Also anyone know where to get the Panasonic 20MM for cheap?

I'm using Panasonic class 10 cards but I believe all you really need is a good class 6 card for the HD video so class 10's are probably over kill (I just happen to get them on sale).

As for the 20mm, sorry, not sure, though it's been reported that they are being discounted here and there.

hello gf1 users!

after reading this thread you have all made me want to get rid of a gripped d300/17-55 combo for something lighter which is a lot less bulky. i've long realized that it is not the setup, but the photographer that takes good photos, so i'm considering switching to the gf1+20/1.7 setup now. i went to the store today to play around with this camera, and although it is smaller than my current setup its not as small as i thought it was (p/s size). nonetheless, the important thing is that it is smaller than what i lug around right now haha. so my question is this, can you all convince me to drop the current setup and grab a gf1+20/1.7 setup instead? i've looked through this thread front to back as well as flickr images, and love some of the images posted, but i'm worried i'll regret making the switch if i do it. can you all perhaps post some low light, high iso shots? the more the better! they don't have to be huge resolution, i'm not a pixel-peeper persay, but just so i can get a feel of what how grainy some settings look.

would any of you recommend dropping my current setup for this if i'm strictly expecting it to be a *slight drop in IQ but a large drop in size? or am i being too ambition with the IQ comparison? let me know your thoughts on the switch.

potential gf1 user,
- matt

I wouldn't just look at any micro 4/3 camera photos. Since the sensor is the same size, I would look at all regular 4/3 photos. With the exception of action shots with the need of fast AF or high speed photos (above 1/4000s) ... the image sensor is the same. In fact, the ISO grain is even better on the E-PL1.

what do you shoot with your dSLR that you feel you don't need it? in terms of lens reach/range and IQ?

I use to own and use a D200 with a set of primes for family photos, occassional product work and just tooling around when I didn't have the motivation to use my film cameras (which I use 80% of the time).

I didn't regularly use the majority of the lenses I owned for the D200 and found that I left the camera home more often then not because I would almost always carry one of my two rangefinders instead. I decided to get the GF1 due to it's compactness and acceptable IQ. I find ISO 800 useable in print and iso1600 useable for web, though I use it at iso400 or 200 most of the time. It's on par or perhaps a touch better than the older but larger sensored D200. I suspect your D300 is at least one or two stop better in terms of IQ at high ISO.

The main limiting factor of the GF1 with 20/1.7 is the fixed focal length - which wasn't difficult for me to adjust to since I prefer primes. The 20/1.7 is almost certainly better wide open than your Nikon kit lens when used at or near it's largest aperture (and since it's at least 1 1/2 stops faster, it compensates for the lower IQ).

The 20/1.7 is an exceptionally good lens and well matched to the GF1. It is almost as sharp as my relatively modern 35/2 summicron and 50/2 summicron.

hope that helps....

i was looking through my photos and i almost always shoot near the wider end than the other, so i feel it would make a descent fit into my shooting style actually. however, thinking about this over the past few days (without writing an essay here) i feel i should probably actually stop caring about what potential camera/lens/accessory i can have, and what sort of photos i can take with that potential new piece of equipment and just stick with what i have. all in all, thanks for the help guys, but i'm going to stick with my current setup!

so what are some reasonable sources for legacy manual focus lenses in the city, now that the Henry's outlet is gone and there's no camera shows until Fall? Nothing overly fancy or esoteric, but like good-condition Canon FD lenses, M42, M, etc. craigslist? pawn shops?

The downtown location is gone. As far as I know, they opened/willopen the outlet store in mississauga...dundas and something I think.

k, the new outlet isn't as remote as I thought it'd be - I thought it was near the airport but is instead just en route to the airport.

that said, any options downtown without getting in the car and hitting the highway?
