I have a Nikon D40..
It has about 7000 shutter counts and still has little more than 1 year warranty left on it..
It's good camera but now I am getting litte problems with limited body functions....
I bought sb600 and d40 does not support some functions..(high speed sync and wirelss sync...)
I found someone who would like to swap the D80 body to my D40+kit lens..

However, no warranty remaining on D80 and I am not sure about shutter counts yet...(I will update it as soon as I find out..)
Also, D40 has better noise reduction in high ISO than D80...

Hm....
I can't decide......
Keep D40 or swap it with D80...........

Need little help, here, please.... :D

p.s. I know that upgrading to D90 or D300 is the best, but can't do it now... lol

Do it if the new body will help you create better photos.

I don't know how much photography experience you have, but 7000 shutters isn't a lot. I'd say keep shooting with what you've got and improve before you upgrade the body. Personally, I shot 2.5 years before I actually found my Rebel XTi to be very limiting (ISO and quality-wise). When you're actually there, you'll benefit more with a bigger upgrade.

Don't be fooled by the fact that the D40 is a 6MP camera, and the D80 is a 10MP camera. They are otherwise of the same ilk.

I shot on my old camera for quite some time until I upgraded. Still was a great camera. The things that made me switch were ISO performance and just speed. Short of that there was little reason for it. If your camera is holding you back then yes upgrade otherwise there is little in a body that truly makes a difference. It is almost always better to buy glass before a body.

I use a D80. It has a lot of nice features that the D40 doesn't have. One of which is the multiple autofocus spots out of the center plane, where the D40 only has the three across i believe.

Nikon CLS flash system is also a nice feature since you have an SB600 already and could use it off camera.

I think aside from the low light capabilities of the D40, the D80 will give you a lot more to play with in terms of learning and expanding your photography. If you have a good price and cant afford a D90, D300, etc. then why not? The only thing i am missing is the high ISO ability, but since i shoot with flashes anyway, it doesn't affect me that much.

You also get access to lenses that dont have motors in them. The 50 1.8 is a fantastic lens and you can use it with AF with the D80, etc.

Go for it!!
