Well as im asembaling my new computer, this made perfect sence, i have like 8 Sata ports on the board... im using what, two? ...

so i looked around, it is available

This is the first thing i see on google

So my question is has anyone tried this? and is it stocked anywhere in toronto? (buy local blah blah) if not off to ebay.

Seems like a good way to speed things up (i type as i wait for 4 gig card to download off a usb 1.1 device)

Just stick with a USB2 reader IMO. I've had issues with hot swapping eSATA drives, plus if you ever decide to use RAID-x with an Intel ICHxR controller, you lose hot swapping capabilities.

A firewire reader is much faster than a usb 2.0 reader.

True, especially if you have the faster CF cards and a mobo that has a firewire port. Firewire readers are also a bit more pricier than USB2 readers.

As the old racer's adage goes: speed costs money; how fast do you want to go?

I have the Addonics CF-SATA adaptor installed in my desktop mentioned in the link above. It's blazing fast and hot swap works perfectly so far in my desktop. I'm quite pleased with the purchase.

I think its more about buying something which i wont have to upgrade later, im foreing into video & im looking into the really big really fast cards... sooo i think the 40$ Addonics one looks good. Now that i know that it works as perscribed I'm gonna look around for one.

I couldn't locate anybody locally you sold these. I believe NCIX out in B.C. sells them but they were out-of-stock so I ended up ordering it directly from the company. Shipping was pretty expensive, so I'd wait until NCIX comes in stock or you find another distributor.

I'd like to get my paws on that Extreme Pro but I'm sure it has a hefty price tag. I shot some video on my 5D MKII during my vacation back in Nov with Extreme III (20mb/s I believe) and noticed a few dropped frames. I read in another forum that the Extreme III were fine for HD video. ARGH!

on a somewhat related note...
should get UDMA compatible reader if you are going to use UDMA cards?

I'm in the market for this too, so any additional info anyone may have egarding SATA/Firewire400/800/USB2.0 CF readers (with UDMA) would be greatly appreciated.

Lexar makes a firewire CF card reader.

sorry to revive a dead thread but I got one from dealextreme. It works realy well for 20 bucks.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14727

A couple issues however:

I had to download a program to eject the CF card. I have to use the same program to insert the card too. Called hotswap! Download here:

http://mt-naka.com/hotswap/index_enu.htm

The SATA cable supplied is tiny (like 4 inches long)
Power is short too.

However since switching to a 40D with full size raw files are huge in comparison to my old 10D. It breathes life into the file transfers...incredible.

If you think thats big, try a full rez RAW from a 5D MkII about 25MB per file.

30mb/s for Extreme III

It should be perfectly fine, I haven't had issues (yet) with 7D and Extreme III.

That's what I thought. Humm, wonder why I had dropped frames. Not like I was shooting continuous or "back to back" video to overflow the buffer.

Ah well...

I recently purchased the Lexar Professional UDMA USB card reader to accompany my Addonics internal CF SATA reader. I use Sandisk Extreme III cards and ran a short informal test copying about 160Mb of data to my workstation using my various card readers. I ran the tests several times and averaged them out.

Lexar Multi-card USB reader - 75 seconds
Addonics internal CF SATA reader - 14 seconds
Lexar Professional UDMA USB reader - 10 seconds

I was surprised that the Lexar Pro UDMA USB reader was quicker than the SATA reader, even though my cards are not UDMA.

I'm using the above readers simultaneously to do big multi-card ingests following wedding shoots using Photo Mechanic. When I had my original Lexar Multi-card reader, it was agonizing to wait for a big shoot to download.

Maybe your video contained far more awesome than the 7D can handle :)

Have you tried a different card?

This looks like a good deal... i just might try this one.

But from reading things im hearing that its a hit or miss with compatabilety with cards. bot this one & the Addonics one. Anyone have anything to say to this?

I didn't remember any labeling on the Extreme III 30Mb/s cards that suggest that they were UDMA enabled? But I just searched and you're right, it seems they are. Great to know.

Thanks for the info on the Lexar pro model. I never really thought much about the speed that the reader would work at.

I use a Canon 50D so the RAW files are pretty large, and it does take some time to grab everthing off the card.

Matt.

They have to be UDMA to do 30MB/s
