 Post subject: lightroom question

I'm on TPMG way too much

Whenever I upload nef filed from my camera and browse through them in lightroom it will say "rendering preview" and the picture looks really good then when its done rendering preview it looks different a lot less pleasing why is that?

While LR is rendering the image it is temporarily using the imbedded jpeg image in the raw file, with all the jpeg processing applied. When LR is finished rendering what you get is the actual raw (nef) file without any processing applied.

ahhhh, So if I had of shot Jpeg it would look as though it did while it was rendering preview .. but as Nef File its the raw full image and I need to edit to get it too look as what the jpeg did?

Yes, but you can use this utility from this thread to extract the imbedded jpeg.

There is a Camera Calibration module at the bottom of the Develop section, you could select the camera profile you want from there and LR would apply the sharpening, saturation, etc that are applied to your in camera jpegs and previews and automatically apply them to the raw files.

Also you can save settings from Develop module as default, being applied to every file from certain camera or serial number. This way it saves time to make you get that look you like in your photos
