Whew, glad I waited. Almost pulled the trigger a number of times on the original f2.8 IS version. Let's see what the price tag on this will be. I sense in the $2100. range.

This is definitely on my wish list for later in the year. Also glad I didn't lose my mind and get the original a few weeks ago.

Alternatively, I might be looking forward to price drops in the 2nd hand market.

Congratulations Carlton.. your wallet will now be lighter in 2010

Now where's that 14-24mm f/2.8 that's been floating around?

I like how the new lens has a shorter MFD and tightens up the magnification too. The Nikon 70-200 VR-II loses magnification. :(

No kidding! When that lens hits the shelves, my 70-200 f2.8 will probably go for $800. on the used market! I saw a number of 70-200 f2.8IS on other forums for as low as $1400. I guess the 24mm TS II is going to have to wait a bit longer...

Time to say goodbye to the $1650-1800 copies on CL.

Looks like the 70-200 f/2.8 (non-IS) has been discontinued? You've got a collector's item now Carlton :?

Also an opportunity for people looking for a used 70-200 F2.8L IS... used prices should come down a bit more eventually.

No pricing released yet, just a bunch of speculation so far. The lens is supposed to hit the shelves by April this year. Seeing that it just got announced, I'm sure some stores will being a pre-order list in the next week or two.

Canon is supposed to make another announcement on Jan 9th (a Saturday?!).

How can they make the old lens any stronger?! It is built like a tank. I am disappointed that they are adding more weight to the new lens. One reason I sold mine and switched to the F4 IS is because of the weight. I wonder if the improvements is worth the extra money and weight.

It's also quite a bit larger in dimensions

Better optics. I guess there was a bit of complaints about the MK I being soft on the long end at f2.8. The MK I was already pretty sharp IMHO but maybe Canon didn't like the idea that the f4 version was sharper than its big brother.

IS II giving it (supposedly) a 4 stop versus a 1 stop (or was that 2 stop, I forget) advantage over non-IS.

Quieter AF and lower profile switches. It's a wee bit wider than the original MK I.

It's only 10grams heavier than the MK I, so not by much.

Anyone planning to pre-order this? Carlton? Maybe we can do a group buy and negotiate a discount. We can go to Golden or Amazing, they have the best price and are Canon dealers ..... anyone? I have a friend who is ordering one but 2 orders doesn't make it quite a group buy yet :D :)

Yeah, 90% chance I will end up getting it from Amazing. It all depends on the price. I usually get a great deal from Amazing but if a group by makes it cheaper, then by all means... :D

Great! Looks like we now have a group of 3 and maybe 4. Keep them coming! The more the merrier.

Some sample pics have been posted but these may be from a pre-production lens.

http://blog.reddotphoto.com.sg/?p=726

I'm going to wait and see how it compares to the current IS version.

I read some really crazy MSRP for the UK market. I really hope the MSRP is some what reasonable for CANADA but historically it is usually not the case.

UK pricing for camera gear is a lot more expensive than buying it in Canada or the US so don't use them as a price guide. Going from other sources, estimated street value is around $2150.USD but again, nothing has been "officially" announced by Canon.

Wow if that is the case with street value of $2150 USD vs. $3500 CDN than we are getting hosed (AGAIN). I wonder if this is another typical situation when retailers exploiting consumers in the interest of profiting for short term gain. I think retailers need to value customers and changed their business model. Information is readily available and it is no longer brick and mortar.. global commerce means retailer need to stay competitive and lower their prices. As consumers we will just find alternatives and get better value for our dollar.

Another point I want to add, when initially our dollar was on par with the US currency. I remember it was long long time ( 1+ year) before electronics MSRP lowered to a more "reasonable" level. Even then it was not on par and retailers used every excuse on why they did not lower their selling price. When the USD went back up it was a matter of weeks that retailers readjusted their prices. It was a huge deal too as the 5D2 just came out and people placed pre-orders only to have retailers updating on a price increased. Personally I don't feel this is a true free market..and more collusion on retailers part.

WOW I just went off tangent big time...but yah I want the new 70-200 but only @ USD street price!

First of all, that price of $3500 isn't even the official price. Canon hasn't even released the pricing for this lens yet, both for the US and Canada.

I'm crossing my fingers for optimistic pricing.

Interesting that the hood is listed as an optional accessory, was it not included on the Mk-I? I know my f4 IS came with a hood.
