SB600?

A friend of mine wants to get a flash for her D60, and asked me for something that is fairly capable, but not too expensive. Not being a Nikon user myself, I was wondering what flash to recommend, and thought that the SB600 should be good enough.

what is the range these days? SB600/800/900? Or, is the SB800 a deprecated model replaced by the SB900, making the model equivalence SB600:SB900::430EXII:580EXII, and SB800~580EX?

Will SB600 do Nikon CLS master mode?

for a modest budget (say, <$400), what would you recommend?

Any peculiarities with the D60 that I should know? I remember coming across that there is one Nikon dSLR that can do hybrid mechanical-electronic shutter, thus having much faster sync speed. Which camera is that?

Sorry so many questions. Hope people can chip in. Thanks!

i believe that is either the D70 or D70s.

the sb800 is no longer in production and you will find used prices to be more than what they were new (ridiculous if you ask me) as for your other questions, I do not know.

With a Nikon SB600/SB900 etc. flash, you can do Auto FP high-speed sync. If you use external strobe units, you are down to the max curtain sync speed. Not sure what that is for the D60.

The D70/s is the only model that could sync at higher shutter speeds (beyond the typical 1/200-1/250") using non-Nikon strobes ie monoblocks etc. I believe the D70 used an electronic shutter at high speeds.

No. SB600 can only be in slave mode. For a D60 to work in CLS, your friend need a SB800/SB900/SU800 to be the commander/master.

The problem is the camera! Not the flash. The D60 lacks the CLS commander feature that the D80/90 and higher models have. So as mentioned - you need to mount an SB800/900 or SU800 on the camera in order to take advatage of CLS.

Actually, the D40 is capable as well.

Oh, ok. Thanks everyone!

So, just to be sure I got this right:

SB800 is a discontinued model.

SB900 has CLS commander mode

SB600 has no commander mode.

D60 inbuilt flash has no commander mode.

For casual use, I suppose the SB600 is good enough for most people?

Yes, and for the price... its a very capable flash unit. It has to be used 'on camera' however for the D60. But that being said, it has all the regular flash gun features of tilting the head, and being able to use bounce flash technique's.

Ahhh, I stand corrected.

Quote:
As with the other Nikon bodies that use this sensor, flash sync on the D40 is arbitrarily limited to 1/500 (with non-TTL sources you can shoot flash at any shutter speed). Shutter speeds above 1/90 on the D40 are done electronically by the sensor, not by the shutter opening time. This allows for use of a less complex, lower-cost shutter, but it introduces the propensity for blooming when you include a very bright light source like the sun in the frame. D40x users will be slightly disappointed to learn that the all-mechanical shutter necessary for that camera's sensor means flash sync is limited to 1/200. Unfortunately, TTL FP is not supported on the D40x.

Yes. SB600 is pretty good.

Also, SB800 has commander mode too.

and SU800 is a dedicated commander. Think ST-E2 in Canon-speak
