Are they sized to fit speedlites?

Tape? Maybe some velcro buttons?

nevermind -- found it on the web. That is hilarious. They have not scrapped the gel sample program at all.... that is a load of crap. I can get samples from my supplier anytime I want in Roscolux, Cinegel, and Lee. Although I guess if you are serious about using them for flash, its nice to have it cut to size, but that's easily done with an exacto knife.

My favourite is the $30 designers sample book... much more useful, and the gels fit small fixtures such as Arri mini fresnels, Altman Inkies, and various small Kupo parcans.

I picked up a set at Merkle Camera (Vic Park and Sheppard) and I mention both LXDesign (David) and Dant (Dan) of TPMG and Patrick Ng gave me a discount on the gel packs. Thanks guys!

They are a little short so tape or Velcro don't work very well. I use the sleeves the photo labs used to pack the developed 35mm negatives.

I saw a post somewhere where someone used those laminating pockets to create gel "cards", and also fashioned card holder for his flash. Seemed like a more long-lasting solution...

I have seen a number of gel holders on the net as well. However I have about ten billions of those sleeves so durability is not a concern.

Actually I have some to spare so if you need some just PM me.

I am actually surprised noone has started mass producing the holders for more widespread flashlights, sell them around $25-40 and you'll make a fortune

Nice one. If they can combine that with laminated gels for durability...

I bought one of these at Henry's and returned it because it did not fit my 580ex2 all that well. Also, it relies on two sided velcro to be affixed to the flash head and if you install the two sided velcro then putting a Sto-Fen on becomes problematic.

Just curious: Have you ordered from MPEX to Canada? If so, how did it go? I'm hearing bad things about MPEX's delivery to Canada. Cheers.

I agree. Another option:

I currently use Honl speedstraps + color correction filter kit. Easy as Pie and no messy adhesives on the flash unit:

Cheers,

Sabesh.

Hey Sabesh,

Great find those gelholder.com thingys - I may check 'em out.

I have used Many's Honl system - very nice indeed - if I recall the gel is oversized and velcro attaches to the top and bottom of the Honl speedstrap.

If you are not too picky about exact colour you can also make your own gels with overhead projector sheets and an inkjet printer.

Hey James,

I haven't tried the "Gelholder", but have heard good things about them.

The Honl system is perfect for me, as I use their 1/8 grid too. I'm able to use filters & the grid together using the speedstrap system, all with no adhesive on the flash unit. I got mine from B&H in NYC as I was ordering some other stuff to, however Vistek has them for a slightly higher price:

Cheers,

Sabesh.

The DV Shop in the Junction on Dundas also carries The Strobist Collection From Rosco. They list them as $16.

http://www.dvshop.ca/digcamera/roscosrobist.html

A little closer to Mississauga.

DOH! I'm getting old. I meant Honl, not Hensel. Duh!

Cheers,

I spoke to Gary Honl via email a few months back and they ship to Canada via USPS (better than UPS Super Soaker, er, I mean Saver).

Here were the shipping rates to Toronto from Honl:
If your order totals 0-$25 shipping cost is $12
If your order totals $25-$50 shipping cost is $14
If your order totals $50-$100 shipping cost is $18
If your order totals 100-$500 shipping cost is $22

Thanks for The Vistek option - they are slightly less than Henry's and Merkle on some items. I am still holding out and seeing if I can do without. Who knows, perhaps I will join the dark side one of these days!
