Hi all,

I know it is a pretty new lens, but I'm wondering if anyone has any hands on experience with the new Canon 24mm TS-E (version 2) and polarizing filters. In particular, I'm wondering whether in anyone's experience with this lens, a normal polarizing filter actually contributes to vignetting on this lens (or do I need to get a slim polarizing filter). Unfortunately it is a bit tough to get a 82mm polarizer locally in the brand I usually use (B & W) - so I'll need to order in.

It is a wide angle lens with a large image circle- so I think there is a good chance that a regular polarizer would contribute to vignetting- though I've noticed that whether this will happen really depends on the particular lens. However, on the new 24mm there is a lot of space between the filter ring and the front glass- and frankly I hate the caps that come with slim filters- so I would prefer to use the regular polarizers. I expect some vignetting at extreme shifts and tilts in any event- but don't want the filters to contribute.

Anyway, if anyone has any actual experience with this lens or knows someone who has encountered this issue could you please comment?
I'll probably order the regular polarizer and give it a whirl unless someone has already given this a try.

Thanks!

-Jason

With a 24mm lens, you will get noticeable uneven polarization on landscape shots. Uber jealous. I wanted to rent one for my trip last week. Kicking myself now that I didn't. There's always April. Enjoy the lens! It's on my list of lenses to get. :D

Thanks Carlton. I think what you are saying is consistent with my own expectations, though not everyone on line thinks it would be a problem with this lens- apparently this type of issue varies with the lens design even at the focal length (which is my experience). One chap I had contacted who uses the lens has got back to me since I posted this query and indicated that the regular would not be a problem (though perhaps I cast the problem as one of vignetting rather than uneven polarization). In any event, I ordered a standard Polarizer for this lens- I'll give it a whirl and report back on my observations.

On the other hand, I'm really looking forward to using this lens. I sold my first TS-E too early (before I had the new lens in hand) and I've had a few outings during the long waiting period where the controls on the TS-E would have really made the difference (including the weekend before this lens came in).

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I rented this exact lens over the weekend. I must say, it's the first lens I'd have to describe as "addictive". Congrats on owning one! :P

As to your question, I believe B+W makes a thin MRC CPL in 82mm, but they're quite pricey. After experiencing the shift capabilities of this lens, I'd go with the slim. At the extremes, this lens shifts like a submarine periscope! There were times I was wondering, how much higher can this thing shift? Simply amazing.

Thanks zone555. I suspect you are probably right about the slim- because of timing I already ordered a regular from B & H (I'm going to the U.S. this weekend) but I will give it a whirl and see what happens. I can return and exchange for the slim if necessary- though it is a pain to send back.

I'm planning to give the lens a workout this weekend- I can't wait!

Cheers,

-J
