Hi all,

I just heard a rumor that Henry's outlet store may be closing in early spring of 2010. Apparently re-opening a used store in Mississauga. Anyone else heard the same rumor?

That's news to me. Hopefully someone like Mawz (who is in there a few times a week) can confirm!

I talked to some sales staff a few weeks ago and they confirmed that they will be closing the downtown outlet. They weren't too sure if they're going to relocate the outlet to somewhere else but there was rumour that they might move some of the more higher end used goods into the downtown existing store.

I decided to stop in (it's on my way home from work)
and asked.

Indeed, they are closing, and moving out to Mississauga.
Apparently, Henry's has sold the building (staff guy wasn't sure who to)
They have till March to get out.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

First I lost George's Trains, now this.

I bought all my camera stuff from there, bodies, lenses, etc.

Well, just as long as the used camera fairs keep up, I guess I will buy from there from now on.

ya international camera's closing up shop and moving his repair business to Mississauga so the West End's looking pretty good right now. Glad I work near the airport.

I can never find anything good there.

Their prices have also seemed to stay fairly stagnant, and they're too reluctant to haggle.

All-in-all I'm sort off off Henry's right now.

I've found stuff at the Outlet Centre that I couldn't find in a normal photography store, like a 90 degree mirror lens, my 500mm catadioptric lens, and lots of other goodies.

As for bargaining, I've had good results there, but they know me as a regular.

If I had to nitpick one of the negatives about HOC is that you can't search on their site...you have to look through every page for something, and they don't have a set standard for listing open box items...sometimes it's *openbox*, *open box*, O/B, etc.

Or working in the west end...

Considering the Henry's Mississauga store is at Hwy 10/Eglinton, my money is on somewhere close to there.

I wouldn't bet on that. It's in a crowded plaza and the Henry's store itself it's not so big.

I spoke to someone at the Mississauga Henry's yesterday. The rumour on their end is that they may be putting the relocated outlet store near Sherway Gardens.

In any case, they're going to lose me as a customer!

Just as George's did.

George's lost me years ago when their supply of LBG went down the tubes. I started buying stuff from Hockley Valley Railroad. But the problem now with LGB is that they went bankrupt a few years ago, and Marklin bought them out, but getting new product to North America has been slow at best. I am not even sure of our suppliers have been getting new stock. But, all of that doesn't really matter right now for me, as I have no space for my layout!

Anyhow... on the front of the Henry's Outlet store.... while I am going to miss them, I don't really buy anything from the store anymore. I did at first when they actually had good stuff for the first couple of years, but I found that inventory was hit and miss in the store. The stuff that was good was way overpriced for what it was, and the stuff that is crap -- is just crap. I can't blame them for moving the store, as the location is probably really expensive for the amount of equipment they move in the store. I don't see them closing the main store anytime soon, as I am sure they do a booming business.

I kept seeing the same stuff there month after month - litterally the same items, not restocks - which to me indicated slow turnover. Maybe with lower overhead at a different location, crap can be priced like crap to make better movements.

Hmm...wonder where to go for used stuff now...not that I went that often...

In any case, I doubt the location is too expensive considering the amount of pawn shops in that area. But you never know I guess.

I usually have good luck with the camera shows/sales/flea markets...whatever you want to call them. There's a whole thread of them in one of the forums.

The next one I think is Camerama Sunday January 24th at the Thornhill Community Centre (Bayview/John)...will post a confirmation as the date gets nearer if no one has already.

Of course you're dealing with individuals (for the most part) with no warranty so it's as-is. I've gotten several 285HVs ranging from $50-$20 (the inexpensive one needed a battery holder)...although you have to watch out...saw someone selling one last weekend for $130 so you have to know your stuff.

Yup, already noted and I'll probably be going since I need some cheap filters (for cheap lenses). The only problem...well, the two problems with these sales is, 1) as you mentioned, it's 'As-Is' condition and 2) You can't just get up one day and say, I need a <insert>, lets go see if store <insert> has it today. Oh well, thankfully the next camera show is soonish.
