The article is dated for tomorrow, so we'll see what Nikon announces tonight at midnight...

Impressive... except for the price tag. It's like combining the best of the 1D and 1Ds Mark III and 7D into one body.

Yeah, but the European market has always been shafted on MSRP compared to the USD pricing. The D3 was $5000 US when it came out, but

The unavoidable question will then be: Is the D3s worth the extra money from the D3?!?

The RG article claims a street price of $5200 US, so probably right around the $6000 mark in Canada, which is less than what I had imagined.

It really makes me wonder what kind of drugs their product management department is on... people have been clamoring for fast AFS primes for a while now (not to mention f4 zooms), and I don't think I've ever heard ANYONE complain about their macro lineup, especially after the last two macro lenses were realeased.

More thoughts on the D3s on Marcus Bell's blog:

http://www.studioimpressionsphotography ... o-footage/

The ISO 12800 shots on his blog and on Nikon's site are very impressive, but "the D3S at ISO 12800 is equivalent to ISO 3200 on the D3 and D700" seems a bit optimistic to me, though I'll have to wait until we see the raw files from a production camera first.

Now to keep my fingers crossed that this sensor makes its way into a D700s next year...

Looks interesting.
The high ISO capabilities are nuts, and it's nice to see Nikon keep pushing on this.

The 85mm VR DX Macro does seem a really odd lens to release right now. it's not very fast, it's crop only, and I don't think it really fills a need in the lens lignup.
Hopefully more announcements to come.

Ya, I can't say that I really need an 85mm macro lens.... would rather go for the 105mm.

Very impressive high ISO processing it looks like the digital people at least at Nikon have finally figured out that film grain is not conventional noise but adds a sort of texture. They seem to have adjusted their noise reduction algorithms to transform digital noise into a film grain equivalent. Smart move!

Definately agree! I love the look of the D700's 6400 ISO -- has a very moody film grain look to it. Similar to some kodak print films.

Gotta love Vistek, the biggest rip off in Toronto along with Henrys. With exchange rate, buying at B&H is around $5500CDN pre-tax. Look at what Vistek wants!

Flame suit on! I will wait to see what Aden or Merkle camera has to offer.

WOW! With the exchange rate so close to the US $, you could fly out for a day trip to BH Photo and back and still have money left over for dinner and a movie and spending cash for the wknd when you get back to TO!

Don't blame Vistek for this price. The good portion of this cost is due to Nikon's MSRP tag for Canadian consumers. Considering the size of US market and number of units that Nikon dealers selling every day south of border, this shouldn't be surprise at all ....

This isn't any different when the CDN matched the USD a while ago. And it didn't last forever either, so if you want to take advantage of the exchange rate, act now. It's great for consumers but really not so great for manufacturers/companies operating out of Canada.

In reality, it hurts us more in the long run.

Aside from that, the high ISO of the D3S is pretty darn good, assuming you can swallow that price tag.

The only problem now is that you'll have to drive to the US to get your Nikon serviced. Hope Aden & other smaller Nikon dealers have better prices.

When the D3 was launched in Canada I seem to remember less discrepancy in the price. I think the Candian dollar may have been doing better than the greenback at the time though. I think it launched at $5500 here, as opposed to $5000 in the U.S.

With the Canadian dollar in fluctuation who knows what will happen by release. My flyer from vistek states this:

Quote:
Estimated release date November 20, 2009. Manufacturer's pricing and availability are estimates at time of publishing and are subject to change.

It doesn't look like it can handle 1080p and is locked at 24p. This will be pretty limiting for all the guys using VSLRs for video work.

Dumb question from a Canon boy...
What is with the 's' designation on the D300s, D3s and soon to be the D700s. Does it signify full frame or some other consistency of model change?
