the viewfinder looks very interesting on 7D with 100% coverage and lcd overlay. Also ability to use both EF-S and EF lenses is kinda cool too

My buddy was telling me today that due to this feature you cannot change to the precision focus screens - if that's your thing.

Just added info... I believe Nikon D700/D3 already has this feature - only on the LCD though (I think).

The D700 has what is called a virtual horizon that is accessible on both LCDs and in the view finder.

The virtual horizon is viewed on the rear LCD by going to the menu setting and turning it on. For ease I have it as an item in My Menu.

To use it in the view finder you have to assign the function button on the front of the camera to the virtual horizon and then when pushed it uses the metering scale to allow you to level the camera while looking through the view finder. The virtual horizon also appears on the top LCD screen at the same time as in the view finder again using the meter line as the level.

The virtual horizon works in both horizontal and vertical (portrait) modes. It only indicates tilt from side to side, not front to back.

I thought Canon have learned their lesson going from G10 to G11. I would rather have fewer pixels and better ISO performance.

Price increase was related to exchange rates whether you want to believe it or not.

Revised sensor design.

Can't really do that but people do that all the time with everything, need to compare it against the Yen.

do you guys remember the 1st time 5D MK II came out? I remember it was a bit cheaper the 1st time it came out than the price right now. can someone verify this?

I am thinking of getting it, but dont really like 'pre-order' because you don't exactly know when you are going to get the equipment. But I am also worried that after the pre-orders, that the price would go up.

do i 'pre-order' now, or should I wait til the stores have it in stock?

update: Vistek has put Estimated Release Date of Sept 30, 2009

interesting. so it actually went down..

Err...not quite. The line that's going down (red) is the USD price converted to CAD. This only reflects the change in exchange rate as the price in USD doesn't seem to have changed at all since the launch. According to DPReview, the launch price was $2699USD for body-only. Right now, Amazon, B&H and Adorama all have it for $2699USD, body-only.

The blue line is the CAD price, and it's been creeping up slowly.

I don't have any data to back it up but I thought the 5dm2 got more expensive right around the time it launched by around $300 or so.

Plus/Minus $300 - it was still WAY too much for my needs.

When it was initially announced, CAnadian MSRP was $2799 I think? Just $100 more than US - this was when the dollar was around parity. It then went in the toilet before the camera was actually available and they jacked it up to $3299. I had one on pre-order at the old price and was barely able to justify it to myself. At $500 more, no way no how. Found me a used Mk1 and am happy with it though if/when there's a MSRP drop on the Mk2 I may reconsider.

As many have pointed out already, yes, there was a price "adjustment."

This thread (2 weeks + 2 days till 5D MKII) should discuss that. It's a really really long thread but pretty much covers everything about the 5D2 from prelaunch to when ppl started picking up their cameras. It talks about price changes, ppl canceling their preorders, finding pricing errors at Blacks, flame wars, you name it, it's got it.

wow! 25 pages.. I don't think i have the time to read those.. lol

so even if I pre-order the 7D, there's no GUARANTEE about the price?

I don't think so. I guess unless your pre-order contract has some kind of price protection then I don't think there's any guarantee. I believe most store policy states that they can change price.

I (and I believe many others) even had a printed Invoice (Henrys) showing my deposit and price of the 5D2 yet when the time came my price went up (I still got well below MSRP so I didn't make a big stink about it).

Deposit never guarantees you the price - only a spot. If you don't like the price, then you can get your deposit back and walk away from it. This isn't anything new from the 5DMrkII.

If you want to guarantee the price then you need to discuss that with the store and get it writing.

When in doubt, always ask. Don't assume.

People assumed that a deposit for the 5DMrkII also meant that the price was locked in. And looked what happened. Some customers were honoured with the original price while the majority were told that the price would be increased due to Canon changing the price at the time of delivery.

This is true, as I actually went through that. Not to mention the pre-order price of the Nikon 70-200 VR-II went up by $400 the day after the announcement (now it's down by $170, still higher than initial price).
