The 7D will be APS-C for sure. I couldn't believe Canon will cannibalize sales for thier pro bodies with anything less than a full crop sensor. I am curious if they'll offer full 1080p in video mode. And 24p framerate!! Considering the excellent specs that have already leaked out (18MP, crazy ISO, 8fps, HD video) there's so way they'd let it compete with the (still backordered) 5D mk II and the 1D bodies.

There are a lot of pro sport photogs that use a xxD body. Several reasons why:

1) lighter (try carrying a 1D body with a big lens for a full day, it is tiring)
2) crop factor (there are many times where the 1.6x is extremely advantageous)

If the 7D has super clean high ISO images, high fps, this could be a really attractive option for those who are using xxD bodies.

Thinking out loud, lol, a 7D and a 5DMrkII would be ideal for me!

It certainly slots in nicely with the T1i, 50D and 5DII.

But I wonder how they'd be able to position a replacement for the 50D going forward. It could be a 7D with T1i video? That would be a great deal, IMHO.

Hmmm.....

Canon will need to update the rest of the lineup eventually but it'll never be done at the same time, there will always be one that has "more" than the other.

I see the 7D/5DMrkII combination similar but cheaper to that of the 1D/1Ds.

7D sounds like my kind of camera. 5D/5DII plus 7D. That would be a sweet combo.

Initially, I felt "betrayed".

After seeing the last few replies, I don't know why I didn't think about having both

Disappointing...the only thing to LOVE for me personally about this is the 100% viewfinder. I was reeeeeeally hoping for a full frame camera. Too bad.

For over $2000, I'd much rather go cross the border and buy a 5Dmk2 from B&H. meh.

18 MP in APS-C... Wonder what innovation they have to keep the noise down.

I wonder how many of those 5000 photographers they asked said "give me 18 Mpixels so that the noise performance is even worse! yay!"

Probably the ones who never go above ISO 400. RG has full-sized high ISO samples on his site.

It sounds like there are some really great features with the 7D, chief among them a complete overhaul of the AF system. I guess Canon's been burned one too many times by their own system and from getting their butt kicked by Nikon. 19 AF points, all of the cross-type sensors, with all sorts of configurability (spot AF, zone AF, AF point expansion), and a very cool orientation-linked AF (the 7D can automatically select a different AF point when you turn the camera from landscape to portrait orientation).

Here's a good description of all the AF options available on the 7D... certainly seems much more useful and effective than even the 1-series AF system.

The wait is over and Canon disappointed me...

May be they sell the crop bodies and lenses more....and that's were their big share, comes from.

Comparing Nikon, they did the same..no new full frame camera this time.
This makes the expectation are going to be really, high next time..

The battle between people to choose from either one..e
Canon 7D and nikon D300s

Cheers

Why disappointed? If you want full frame, there is the 5D Mark II and 1Ds Mark III. This camera competes with Nikons D300s head to head and is almost like a new segment for Canon. I am sure a cheaper full frame will be here in a year or two. In the mean time, the used 5D is a bargain right now.

For me, this is as perfect a camera as I can ask for to complement my 5D.

That's pretty good for ISO 800, noise is pretty consistent across the image especially the lack of chroma noise. Of course we'll have to wait and see if there is any banding noise :)

With that pixel pitch and density, anything less than L glass won't be able to keep up. Heck, even then I'm not sure some L lenses will either.

For those who have the 5D II, is this sample ISO 800 image come even close to the 5D II?

Rob Galbraith has some links in there to samples from the 7D and 5DMrkII. The 5DMrkII to me seems to have a slight advantage, noise appears to be 'finer' vs the 7D which is probably due to the larger sensor.

I'm glad they didn't use the pic of the Asian girl to demonstrate spot AF. LOL
