Google and you'll find numerous similar definitions.

There's a huge difference btwn a staged shot and a candid of the bride and groom at a wedding.

As someone who shoots weddings, I find that comment rather insulting.

I tell like I see it so why are you insulted? It's not a bad thing for a staged shot to look natural or a "candid" to look staged you might even say the photographer is doing a good job. Lets face it wedding are staged events and the bride and groom are patently aware of the fact. The question is the above photograph a candid. My answer that personally I wouldn't call it a candid because it doesn't speak to me as a candid moment, but I have no problem with it being called a candid because it's one of those terms that doesn't have a fixed definition when applied to photography.

Yes Google and you will also find numerous alternative definitions. Now at the start of the thread Taylor laid out suggested posting guidelines I think a bit too limited a definition for most of us.

I bold'd it for you, and your explanation doesn't jive.

Saying that a "wedding doesn't count", means all the work and effort that goes into documenting a wedding in a candid or PJ style is discounted. It's like taking a great shot, and the 1st comment someone makes is "you must have PS'd it".

The term "candid" has a specific meaning in wedding photography.. it means "unstaged".

Kin Lau exactly my point a wedding candid is a special definition of candid photograph. It's just not my personal definition as I see a candid. I never said it didn't count, I don't have a problem with you or anyone else calling it a candid. Live and let live you shouldn't feel insulted because other's have a different definition then you do.

C'mon eveyone!!!

This is a photography forum - not an English thesaurus forum. The definition for 'Candid photography' is much more inclusive than what most people (myself included) would assume. No need to suggest that this definition is wrong nor is there any reason for people to get insulted by the fact others have differing (less inclusive definitions).

Let's talk about the photos - that's what we're here for.

My point precisely. A shot of bride and groom sitting on the stage looking at the camera, or even during the bridal shoot, if you tell them to look away from the lens, can be discounted as not being Candid. But if you happen to catch a true emotion of a tear rolling down the bride's face, or the nervousness of the hands, or in this case shot of a first dance, that is totally a Candid.

Quote:
the shot in question does not look any different then a staged wedding shot.

Again, that shot was not "staged". After having provided my explanation of how I happened to capture that shot, calling it "staged" is ... well not nice.

Statements like this just render the concept of photojournalistic style of wedding photography null and void.

As a side note, please don't think I'm trying to stuff down my definition of candid or anything else for that matter down anyone's throat. I just wanted to share a picture which I consider a candid, so I did. You don't think so? Move along to the next picture and fuhget abaat it!

To my own correction, my picture does not meet the criteria listed at the beginning of this thread i.e. they are not complete strangers, they subconsciously knew I was taking the picture, etc.

asadikhan instead of partially quoting (misquoting) me you might try reading my whole statement. No where did I say it was a staged shot. I did say that wedding were staged events and the shot in question looks like some staged wedding shots I have seen that was not to imply it was staged. Also no where did I say your shot couldn't be included in this thread as a candid exactly the opposite. It was my observation of what I personally consider a candid purely on the basis on how I personally connect with the image. If it was my shot I wouldn't call it a candid but I have no argument with other people's definitions for their own shots.
