Just finished mine this evening using a 22" diameter mixing bowl and a 9" diameter pizza dish (both from Tap Hong). I have a Sto-fen Omnibounce attached to the flash head for "protection" from the relatively sharp edges.

I stopped by Sears this afternoon for more cut-off wheels for my Dremel and noticed that a 20 pack of reinforced cut-off wheels were on clearance for $9.94. I picked up two and took them to the cashier to pay and they rung up to $4.39 with tax for both packs together! Maybe this bit should be posted in RFD.

Post pictures please :D
I plan to start putting mine together later today.
The pan I got is an inch smaller then the one they suggested, but I'm sure it will still get the job done.

Did you use the lastolite Ezybox hotshoe plate?

Yes I did.

I had to go with the larger pizza pan due to the large flash head on my Sony HVL-F58AM flash - there wasn't much material left in the middle of the "ring" of the Lastolite to attach the front diffuser.

For those interested in taking on thsi project but don't want to dish out the $75 Vistek wants for the original Lastolite bracket, Studio98 on eBay has this bracket with a foldable softbox for about half the price of the bracket alone!

Didn't need to modify the Lastolite bracket, just needed the correct size bolts.

I could be wrong, but I don't think your going to get the full beauty dish effect unless the inside is white.

I'm just waiting for the paint to fully dry and then I'm putting mine together.

My Alien Bees beauty dish is silver, inside and out, as well. AB switched from a white interior on their dish to a silver finish (which they now call the High Output Beauty Dish). They also include a white sock that goes over the entire dish which also fits around the DIY dish.

Wow.. nice work you guys :)

I really should start mine *LOL*

I think the white paint is a good idea, but I'll probably look at a gloss or semi-gloss versus a flat..

Cheers,
Dave

I would suggesting priming the bowl and pizza pan.
The spray paint I used had some primer in it, but not nearly enough.
The paint has already begun to chip off.

The original guide suggested sanding the bowl before painting. Did that help at all or is a layer of primer a must?

Isn't that why it's stainless steel? lol just kidding. Hummm, maybe some metal primer like tremclad before the finish? Nice job guys! Looks really pro!

I sanded the bowl by hand and I still had the issue.
Cheap spray paint may very well be to blame.

Does anyone still need help with their beauty dish? I can cut and drill but I don't have the patience to wait for paint to dry.

No, I left it alone. I brought the "sock" that came with my Alien Bees HO beauty dish to see what sort of effect that would give, but since my flash gun was a lot less powerful than my Alien Bees strobe, it killed quite a bit of light.
