Noise is a digital concept.

yup, it may just be semantics, since both words describe someting visually similar, but general consensus is film grain = good and digital noise = bad.

film shooters can identify certain brands and types' "personality" from their unique grain patterns, colour warmth and tonality.

as a digital shooter, i do go out of my way to simulate grain by adding noise in different ways, finding that a good grain pattern adds just the right mood to a shot.

so that means the photo i was referring to was shot with a film camera...
but when it's shot by a digital camera, it's always noise, and not grain.. since grain only pertains to that of a film?

thanks...i didnt know this.. since i started taking photos digitally, dont have any real knowledge with film

This thread is actually a great example of the analog vs. digital look. Take a look at the grittier feel of the posted images by film shooters on this page - Burlap, Metrix and Ken - and compare them to the smoothness (and sometimes jpeg artifacting) of the digital shots.

While preference is subjective, there is a difference. I prefer a grainier look and go out of my way to reduce the digital in-camera noise and lay in a noise pattern that I like better in PS.

Film is actually made up of tiny grains of light-sensitive silver-halide suspended in an emulsion. Depending on the film, processing and exposure these grains can be visible in the final image (Under some circumstances, particularly under-exposure and over-development aka 'pushing' they will clump into larger grains). Certain films, especially Tri-X and HP5+ have very pleasing grain patterns.

Luminance noise can mimic grain to a large extent, although its a regularly distributed pattern rather than a randomly distributed pattern like grain. Chroma (colour) noise is the 'ugly' noise that most people object to with digital. Minimizing Chroma noise while allowing some luminance noise to come through is how Nikon and Pentax get the rather film-like look from their recent DSLR's.
