This event has been rescheduled to Saturday June 16th. All other details remain the same.

What: Grindstone Creek From the Bottom to the Top
Where: Starting at Aldershot GO Station in Burlington NORTH PARKING LOT.
When: Saturday June 16th, 9:30AM
Bring: Camera Equipment including tripods and various ND filters if you got em. Comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, hip waders ;), bug spray, snacks, money for parking & post creek munching.
Additional Info: Since people enjoyed Grindstone Creek so much at the waterfall event we decided it'd be a good spot of its own. We'll start at the top in Waterdown at Waterdown/Great/Grindstone Falls and hike to the bottom in Aldershot. This will take at least a few hours as we poke along shooting. It is pretty hilly but overall fairly easy hiking. In addition to the creek itself there are forest flora to shoot as well as insects for macro shooting.

We will set this up as a car pool event so that when we get to the top of the route there is a car available to pool us back up to the bottom. Thus attendance is a bit limited.

This event will be exactly like the May 19th event except in June. I created this assuming most people will already have plans for the 19th of May.

This confused me for a nano second. I thought I was suffering from deju vu. I prefer the May trip over June, but the area was so rich in opportunities that I think a June trip would be worth it. Currently I am pretty open in June except for the weekend of June 15th on which I am otherwise engaged.

I might be able to make it for June 16 - 17 if there's no change to the current schedule pattern.

I think its time for a firmer date. I need to do some planning for June. As I mentioned previously I cannot attend on the 16-17th.

Can we do this on one of the first weekends of June? I am unavailable from the 16th of June until the long weekend. Thanks.

Date set - Saturday June 9th. Unless I miraculously end up in Montreal for the GP I will be in Burlington to watch it that weekend so this works.

I've heard rumor of these shoots not making very much progress.
As such I'm going to hold off as I'd like not to spend a day waiting around for those dragging their feet.
If there becomes a smaller rogue group heading for the falls, I very well might be more interested.

That is the nature of photowalks in general and the specific purpose of this walk. They're slow.

It wouldn't exactly make sense to park at the bottom and then sprint the 4+ kilometers to the falls. The point of this photo-hike is to take in the creek and the many drops and cascades and slowly work up to the falls photographing as we go.

Thanks for the instructions on photo walks.
Though in case you have forgotten, I've been on many in my time.
My point is: if you never make it to your goal, what is the point of going?

I'd like to go but don't want to spend an entire day either.

I think we all want to get to the goal, the waterfalls in this case. The question is how long the journey is going to take. If you find the lowest common denominator of the group is too slow for you, I do not think you would be looked down upon if you go at a faster pace. You may even find a few people joining you. In the end we'll all meet at the falls. If you get their first and get the photos you want, just relax and enjoy the falls and maybe even give some helpful tips to any newbies.

Actually the falls are not the goal. They're just at the end. The goal is to enjoy this trail from top to bottom taking pics of whatever interests the participants along the way. Plus have a chat and a laugh along the way. That takes about 3 hours. We were just over 3 hours last time. While the falls there are decent they're not worth a trip from the city on their own. But, combined with the rest of the creek it is worth the three hours for many folks. While it's not the best spot for bird photography the potential for that exists, the potential of macro of forest flora and fauna also exists, which is probably what I'll focus on, and along the way this area provides several scenic areas that I think are worth taking pics of.

If you will check this site it shows Snake Falls. Its no wonder you missed it. Probably dried up when you passed by.

Rats. Just realized I'm busy on the 9th. I'm not managing to unregister from the event. Can someone help so someone else can take my place? Thanks.

Hello all: I am new to waterfall photography, what kind of polarizer and filter would we need for photographying waterfalls? Besides the tripod, what other equipment is suggested to bring?

Generally for waterfalls you will want a ND filter to cut down on the light so,you can shoot slow enough to get the water to have that milky smooth look. A circular polarizer is another option, it can help cut down on the reflections in the water and the wet rocks (although that depends on your personal preference). Also a circular polarizer maybe all you need to cut down the light and give you that slower shutter speed (depending on the light that day of course). Those are your two most commonly used filters for waterfalls.

Although if it's a sunny day and the waterfalls is in the shade some people like to pull out a gradual ND filter to equalize the exposure difference between the two extremes. Obviously you can also do bracket exposure and later combine them with an HDR program.

At the end of the day the filter you use, or techniques you follow all comes down to what look you want their photos to have (I.e. if you prefer to have the water in a frozen state over the falls instead of that milky smooth look, then you won't want to use any filters).

I highly suggest a Fader ND Filter. It goes from 2 to 8 fstops. You focus and compose then turn the filter same way you would a polarizing filter until you get the shutter speed you want to make the water like silk. I used one last time we went on the trip and it worked out great.

Thank you for the link Bynx, I must admit I do not recall seeing that. If there is ever a heavy rain I will make an attempt at tracking it down.

Next event I host here will be in the Autumn, if there's enough demand I'll make two.

Current forecast is rain. This event is not rain friendly and will be cancelled if it's pouring. We'll wait until Friday to see what the forecast for Saturday is and take our gamble based on the hourly weather prediction.

I have been asked to work on Saturday morning. I don't have to give them an answer until tomorrow, so I will look at the forecast before answering.

The forecast is still not in our favour folks. As most of you are travelling in from Toronto would you prefer a ultimate decision made tonight which may not be accurate or shall I wait until tomorrow morning and look out the window and post a decision?

I need to give work an answer after my lunch break (3:30), so given that this is looking very iffy I think I will agree to work and pull out of this shoot. I will check the thread at the end of my break though.
