This challenge is discussed in the event feeler section. To summarize from the other post:

Thank you all for taking part in the first challenge. Round two is here.

Edit the model photo anyway you like (add/ remove make up, skin clean up, fix lighting, ….)
Bonus point for creating a magazine cover/ poster/ ad

Rules:
* Please post any suggestions on changes to the challenge in the feeler post.
* Members are encouraged to ask questions about the editing methods.
* Participants answer and outline their edit steps and share knowledge.
* No negative comments about edits. If you have improvement suggestions, I would prefer if you do another edit and demonstrate your point (naturally you would have to share the steps of your new edit
* please avoid using plug-in as you would need to explain your edit.

Take part and have fun.

Ok, a before & after comparison:

Image
compare-close by mike.tan, on Flickr

Besides the text, I've stacked 10 layers, here's what they do:

Layer 0: Original. Do not modify so that there's a backup, and editing progress is more obvious.
Layer 1: Ok, I know I'm not supposed to use plug-ins, but this just makes things easier: I used Color Efex Pro 4's Dynamic Skin Softening filter to smooth out the skin tone.
Layer 2: Increase brightness (+35) on left side, selectively brushing in adjustment to make the lighting level difference on both sides of her face less drastic
Layer 3: Stamp visible to create a new layer, used liquify tool to: (i) lower height of her right shoulder; (ii) increase height of her left shoulder; (iii) slightly reduce width of jawline; (iv) slightly increase size of her eyes; (v) slightly plump up her lips.
Also, on layer 3, begin clone stamping/ healing brush to eliminate moles, stray hair on RHS, and small bumps on skin.
Also, on layer 3, dodge (lighten) her eyes, select highlights, brush in gradually (5% exposure),
Also, on layer 3, dodge (lighten) her teeth, select midtones, brush in gradually (8% exposure).
Layer 4: Levels adjustment, increase contrast, selective painting in on mascara/eyeliner region to darken that area.
Layer 5: Skin smoothing layer: Add new layer (Cmd+Shift+N), use soft (0% hardness) medium sized brush, sample underlying layer, low transparency (5-10%) to brush in skin tone in selected regions. Repeat sampling very frequently to match underlying skin tone.
Layer 6: Hue/Saturation layer: Colorize yellow, match colour with lip colour and right eyebrow, really paint it in
Layer 7: Hue/Saturation layer: Colorize red, match colour with left eyebrow, really make it prominent, and not half hearted.
Layer 8: General sharpening: High pass filter, 2.2 pixels, soft light blending, brush out parts which are objectionably sharpened (e.g. hair should not look white post sharpen)
Layer 9: Selective sharpening: High pass filter, 2.2 pixels, Linear Light blending, brush in only for eyes, and lips. apply only very conservatively.

Add text layers, add layer properties, drop shadow, bevel and emboss to taste.

Done.

The rules say no negative comments, but I'd really like to hear all comments, positive or negative, what would you have done differently etc. Let me know!

First thing fire the makeup artist
Second borrow Portrait Professional and set settings to maximum 8)

This is about 1/4 of the job I don't have the patience to spend the time necessary to correct everything. If it was my shot I would either shoot my self (not with a camera) or if I was desperate send it to a touchup artist who is also a MUA so she could draw on some real makeup.

Image

In Lightroom

Colour Balance
Adjusted curves, shadows and highlights
Cleaned up some hair and skin blemishes
Enhanced the eyes and whitened teeth

Cloned a copy and increased the vibrance to 75% in the cloned copy

Exported both copies
Layered in the parts of the vibrant copy to the original
added a layer with smoothed skin
Flattened
Some more cloning out of stray hair
Detailed colour balance (still not happy maybe should of added more warmth to the skin tones)
Minor curve adjustments

erm, yep, first thing that came to mind was that there had been a disgruntled MUA who left in a huff or something, and the photographer decided to make the most of a bad situation.

Excellent job Mike,
In layer 3: do you remember what your brush settings were when you removed the stray hair on RHS? I keep getting smudges on the background when I try to clean it up.
thanks

This makeup job would take too long to fix, if it's even possible. I decided to go the other way and try to bring out the brush strokes and give the photo a more edgy look over all. I first used a brush to lightly bring down the hot spots on the right side of her face. Then used a clone stamp to clean the image up a bit. Lens correction to straighten out the perspective and make her shoulders line up a bit straighter. After that I converted to B&W in PS playing with the sliders to my liking (trying to bring out those brush strokes and freckles). After that I over sharpened it globally using the high pass filter, put a layer mask over it to hide the sharpening and brushed the the sharpening back into certain parts of her face to try to bring out the freckles and bad makeup job.

Thanks Eddie. I think I used a very small brush, barely 2-3 times the width of the hair, and 100% opacity, sampling really really close to the hair to minimise the difference between the clone source and target location.

Needed to rest perspective after editing a lot of work. This came out as a nice sidetrack before I resume editing again.

Step 1 - Open file in your RAW editor and aim for a smooth, clean and neutral look
Image
2 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 2 - I want to focus just on the skin lightness/brightness. I want a very fair skin, almost no color to it but lost of texture. so in the raw file adjust luminance to the red/orange/ and red channels
Image
1 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 3 - once the raw file opens, create a new layer copy on top, and use the blur filter. Be careful to choose settings that still provide a good contour and delimit the transition areas (lips/skin - eyes/eyelids) once you're happy with that, blur away!!
Image
3 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 4 - create a new empty layer, fill with 50% gray, set the layer mode to either overlay or soft light
Image
4 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 5 - I add some noise, just a bit. Make sure you have selected gaussian distribution and monochrome
Image
5 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 6 - now blur that noise by using the Gaussian blur filter; just a tidy bit, I usually choose .5 to .7
Image
6 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 7 - Recover some texture and imperfections from the skin by bringing the original image file to this layer. Use Apply Image and fiddle around with the settings until you are happy with the preview.
Image
7 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 8 - group the BLUR and NOISE layers under a group. Add a black mask to the group and paint white the skin areas that you want smooth. Once you're done create a composite merged image on top.
Image
8 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 9 - here comes the fun part. go to your channels tab and select the red channel ( it contains most skin colour info). while the red channel is selected press the control key+ click and you'll see the red areas over the image being automatically selected. go to your adjustment layers and select a BW layer

Image
9 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 10 - Once the layer pops-up, add a white mask and paint the color areas you want to keep saturated.
Later, add a levels or curves layer on top to balance white the skin tones
Image
10 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Step 11 - Final touches: create another merged composite on top and work the saturation on the eyes and make up. Then add your favorite sharpening method and refine any make up imperfections ( I re-did a bit the lips and eyes)
Image
11 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

Done, now you can compare

Image
12 by Doll_Murderer, on Flickr

and verify that you have lots of texture and a very fair skin to make your magazine cover.

Quick 10 minute edit.
Nothing spectacular, and threw out most of my ideas.

I wanted to make the image look a bit edgy.

The left image is basically what I edited from Adobe Camera Raw to get the colors the way I wanted.

The right is how I manipulated the image. I first got rid of some of the strands of hair and spots on the skin and reduced the amount of freckles. I lightly touched up the eyes. I did blend in a HDR version of the image with this (using Luminosity blend mode). I then just did a simple Gaussian blur and masked the areas I wanted to keep detail and rather than using the opacity/fill sliders, I used different shades of grey in the mask to fine tune how much detail I wanted in various areas of the skin. After all was said and done, I just sharpened the image.

I think this one had a good run. Thank you all for taking part. Can I ask one of the Mods to move this to aftermath?

A new one will be coming in the next couple of days.
