Good shots Ken! Let us know how the comparison turns out.

OT: Which backdrop did you use? I like the colour & pattern on the first one. Thx.

Thanks Sabesh - the backdrop was just a white cloth that had been painted... one of the owners at Elevator lent it to me (just grabbed what I could find). Since my main focus was to test the 8x10, I didn't really care about the colour, I just wanted something a touch darker than medium grey to contrast with both grannies light grey/white hair.

The backdrop is the same in the first and the second, perhaps a slightly different section.

I'll take a few weeks for me to get around to making all the prints. I'll be processing the 8x10 on Wednesday but will unlikely have time to make contact prints until after I return from vacation on April 21st. I'll update here and if I manage to make half decent pt/pl contact prints, I'll bring them to a social later this spring.

To keep things on topic, I've found the IQ out of the GF-1 remarkably good and the compact size and quality of the 20/1.7 sealed the deal for me. The GF-1 replaces the my old D200 and a bunch of Nikkor lenses which have since been sold.

I agree. The 20/1.7 is a remarkable value, considering it's high performance and size. I've ordered an el-cheapo hood from eBay for shots towards the sun (that being said, flare control isn't too shabby either). Cheers.

are there any deals to be had anywhere on the E-P2 kit w 14-42 and EVF? if everything comes out to about equal and there's no price drop in sight, I am just going to bite the bullet and order one but if anyone has an idea for saving some coin, I'm listening...

What's the warranty of Olympus like? North America wide, like Canon? or like Nikon?

Thanks!

Olympus warranty is worldwide!

Now different parts of the world have different term limits, for instance the UK requires electronics to have two years (though they pay more for that warranty), but how long the warranty is depends on the country where you bought the camera, typically 1 year for North American bought products.

The best deal appears to be via Newegg:

Looks like there is an overstock sale on adapters for some MF lens at cameraquest. Are these Rayqual adapters any good?

Looks like people have good experience with Rayqual adapters. Some mention of it here as response to the RJ adapter review:

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/ ... hp?t=69695

That being said, I have ordered an RJ adapter from Jinfinance in M mount (cheap, from eBay). Will let you know how that works out once I get it. Cheers.

^^ Good shots Ken. Was the 2nd shot taken with a large aperture? The lady in the background is slightly OOF, but looks good. Disregarding the contrast, the Autocord pics appear to have slightly more detail as compared to the m4/3 cam (not sure if it's due to the sharpness). Cheers.

PS> I just took delivery of the Panasonic 7-14 lens. Pretty impressive little thing. I'll post some pics when I shoot something interesting :)

thanks, both were at f4... in the second one, my taller granny is out of the plane of focus a bit too much, however in the first one almost all three of us are within or near enough the plane of focus to appear sharp...

the 7-14 sounds like a compelling lens... looking forward to seeing some images from it... I am particularly interested in distortion or lack there of...

Opps, made a mistake, the overstock sale is on Olympus OM lens only

Sabesh, just in case you were interested I took a shot of the E-P2 with the 4/3 adaptor and 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 mounted. Sorry about the quality; I just pretty much tossed it on my desk for the shot

Rob, how's the AF performance of this lens with the E-P2? Thx.

It's no speed demon, because contrast autofocus itself is slower, but it's in the same range as the 14-42 or 17mm. At least it's designed for this use.

Understood and perfectly fine with me, as long as it's in the 14-42 AF speed range. I'm thinking of using one until the new Olympus 14-150 is released and then reviewed.

I've been looking at samples from the Panasonic 45-200 & 14-140. Those lenses are not as sharp as the Olympus 40-150, and I need that extra bit of sharpness for occasional cropping. I've ordered an adapter, and hoping to receive it next week. Thanks.

well, bought a used E-P1 and 14-42 last night, should have it by Tuesday. It was cheap enough that it will get me out and shooting without a lot of buyer's remorse and if/when Olympus releases a Pen that has the features I want, I can upgrade without much loss. I was going to get an E-P2, but couldn't bring myself to pay twice the price for the EVF and a couple art filters (though I like the ones they added). Just need to get me the 20mm f/1.7 and I'm good to go.

yay!

Congrats and welcome to the club! You are gonna love this baby. Keep an eye out for the 20/1.7 at Fred Miranda. There are some good deals to be had there. Cheers.

My understanding is that Panasonic is relying somewhat on in-body lens correction, whereas Olympus isn't. This might show up in the results from the two manufacturer's lenses, when used on an Olympus u4/3 body.

Panasonic and Olympus don't sharpen via s/w it seems. Olympus corrects distortion, while Panasonic corrects distortion and lateral chroma. I asked the question in DPR and that thread just blew up with lots of info:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=34802032

The samples I checked for Panasonic lenses were taken with the GF1. At least one reviewer has the same opinion as I regarding sharpness of the 40-150 (scroll down to the "alternatives" paragraph):

http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showprod ... 226/cat/69

You can then compare Panasonic 45-200's blur index with Olympus 40-150's:

http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showprod ... 086/cat/15

I just picked up the 40-150. It's smaller and lighter than I thought. Now, have to wait for the adapter to arrive, lol.

Cheers,

Sabesh.

The older 40-150 was heavier and F3.5-5.6, rather than 4.0-5.6 like the current one. It would feel very out of place on the E-P2.

As I stated earlier in the thread, you can see any of the FourThirds or Micro FourThirds lenses on any FourThirds or Micro FourThirds body at:

In the US, in January, brink and mortar stores had an Olympus deal going that involved getting the 40-150 4/3 lens and the 4/3 to u4/3 adaptor for essentially the normal price of the adaptor.

one of the four exposures (HP5+/Pyro 14 min) I made with the 8x10 camera came out tack sharp... the others suffer from the subjects moving (exposure times were 1-2 second - packard vacuum shutter with bulb only + SB-28)... I'm happy with the results all things considered...

impossible to compare image quality between M4/3, 2 1/4 film and 8x10 film on a screen but I thought I would follow up with a scan of the 8x10 film ... excuse the newton rings...

^^ You are right, the IQ difference seems to be negligible. However, they have different tonal/contrast characteristics. I like this one as the contrast makes the background look dramatic; stormy, even. Cheers.

Has anyone slapped an old style viewer on top of the GF1 with the 20mm lens yet. For me this would make framing a lot better. Sure it wouldn't show you whats in focus but thats ok with me.

You mean like this one? It's specifically designed for the Olympus u4/3 17mm and it fits on the hotshoe.
