Like many of you here, I'm looking for a more affordable way to shoot larger and larger sensors. Rumors are that this http://www.camera-pentax.jp/new/ is Pentax's long awaited 645D, priced at a very cool $6500 USD. Not bad if it has at least 50% more pixel space than 35mm. If it's actual 645 area (56 x 41.5mm), that's more than 2.5 times larger than 35mm.
Here's hoping.

Hoya had even a custom-made SR system (for large size sensor) patented last year. I saw the extensive document in its patent application.
If it materializes after years and years of talk, this price point at $6.5K will sell. I will be interested too at this price point.
The ebay market for anything 645 has been on the high side for years

So, it's out. "40MP, 44 x 33 CCD sensor, 921k dot 3.0" LCD and is compatible with the existing 645 system lenses." Will run you roughly $9400 USD.
Cheapest medium format digital system, by a long shot.
Still too rich for my blood, but wow, that's half the price of the cheapest PhaseOne.

What!? No pop-up flash and video mode?! Just kidding! Good to see someone step up to the plate and offer a medium format solution for under $10K USD. Wonder if this will be a wake up call for Hasselblad and Mamiya to rethink their pricing scheme?
I'm sure there is a niche crowd/following that will always use a 'blad or Mamiya regardless but from a cost perspective, that sub $10K for a 40MP medium format looks mighty tempting I'm sure! |

Actually, the Mamiya DM22 is functionally cheaper than the 645D (it's $9995 USD, but includes an 80mm lens, the 645D is $10500 with the 55mm lens or $9400USD without). The main difference is that the 645D is 40MP, and 40MP solutions from other vendors are all $20k+USD, it's the 16MP and 22MP MFDB setups that were previously cheap. |

| I've seen a few Mamiya ZD's go on ebay for under $5000-. There's a ZD back on right now for only $3500- BIN. |

| oooh .. you guys stop it! I recently aquired a Mamiya AFD. And I am looking forward to getting a digital back like the DM22 or similar in the future. But right now - I don't have the cash or credit to buy one. |

Compared with a full frame sensor
Chance is high (???) that it is a Samsung sensor completing what Samsung has endeavored for years.
It is those Japanese Korean thing between them. Pentax was the Canon in the 70s and with one big stroke Pentax has leapfrogged in the resolution game. |

| Perhaps it's the angle but the smaller sensor doesn't appear to be a full frame sensor (24x36). The long side looks shorter than the short side of the 645d sensor. Maybe it's an apc sized one ? |

| It says right in the press release the sensor is produced by Kodak. |

Yes. I did not read that much into the release at all.
I will be in the Far East coming Monday. But it is about $4,000 above my price point and the money is in my 2015 budget
Re size of sensor

This seems to be correct size comparison

| If it is anything like the Pentax 645 film version, this will be a great camera. Mine is the most fun medium format camera I've used. |

hehe.. I could have told you that
I enjoyed using it whilst I had one...
You just need the AF lens for it. The ergonomics on the camera, imho, are awesome
Cheers,

Father-in-law has both a hassy (cx-something or other), plus the Pentax MF. Getting a digital back for the hassy is just too expensive so both are just collecting dust. Sad really. Very nice cameras. Beautiful viewfinders. |
