I am heading to Hamilton with my wife and another couple to photograph waterfalls. We are all new to this type of photography although I have done it once before.

Two things:

1- We will likely go to three to four locations, any suggestions (There are tons of them)?
2- Any tips or techniques would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Jamesy

Get a tripod and rubber boots. Leave wife at home.

a neutral density filter will allow you to use a long shutter speed and blur the moving water (shoot at 100 ISO).

Well, I tried to shoot waterfalls a few times. waterfalls.hamilton.ca points to the lookouts where you can see the waterfalls from above. It is nice for everyone who just wants to see them. But for photographers it's always better to get to the bottom of the waterfalls. It needs you to hike. By following the website you won't probably get where you want to be. You will have to check google maps or bruce trail map (sold on its website).

There are many waterfalls in Hamilton. I personally like Webster's falls. Tew's falls are just within walking distance.

Waterfalls of Ontario is one of the best resources on our waterfalls - I have shot nearly all of them over the past 10 years... there are certainly access issues to most of them - but there are enough online resources that share information on how to access the most popular sites to visit.

Just an FYI, I believe several of the waterfalls in the area are within Conservation areas and if so you may want to visit them the same day as I believe a conservation day permit is good at all the areas. Maybe someone more familiar with this can comment further.

Shooting waterfalls is fun! Of course, bring a tri-pod and a couple of lens choices to help frame your image. a CPL can help reduce glare and bring out more details behind the water.

If you are feeling a bit adventurous, don't be afraid to step into the water, but be careful of strong currents. I like to keep the camera strap around my neck even when the camera is mounted on the tri-pod, in addition to holding the tripod down.

Considering that your post was from a few months ago, how did the experience go ?

P.

I ended up mentoring a couple of friends on how to shoot longer shutter speeds - it ended up being more of a hike with a bit of shooting rather than a day shooting waterfalls.

Hamilton is a great spot. One of my favourites is Albion Falls and Websters Falls. I like to set my shutter around 1/50 - 1/80 slightly blur the water. Bring a tripod of course!
