I have a wedding to shoot on Saturday. It will be a whole day event starting from the bride's prep to the dance party so there's a whole lot to cover. I have the following gear and I'd like your opinion on them.

1. Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24-105mm F4 L IS, Speedlight 550, Quantum Turbo Battery

2. Canon 7D, Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS, Speedlight 430

I'll have my 50mm F1.8, 85mm F1.8 and 16-35mm F2.8L handy.

I'll be using both set ups for the ceremony shots and I'm wondering if I should use the 16-35 instead and on which camera body.

Any thoughts? Would it be better to use the 16-35 on the 7D?

I'm not sure how big your indoor shooting areas will be, but for the bride prep I would use the 50mm on the 5D and the 7D with 16-35mm. I agree with try to use natural light where possible, so using the 50mm @ F/2. For other indoor, I would use the 70-200mm on the 5D instead of in the 7D. 16-35 on the 7D will be good for group shooting and having a bit more DOF at wider apertures for all eyes in focus.

Just my 2 cents.

You have a good set up.

Bride and Groom's Preparation:
Personally, I like shooting the 'preparation' using natural light as much as possible. So I tend to use a faster lens. If I had your set up, I would use 50mm F1.8 and 85mm 1.8 on 5D2 for most of the preparation then use 16-35 if I need wider shots (full body, to capture the whole dress). I would only use flash if there's not much light coming in from the windows.

I'm shooting with natural light with the 50 and 85 during preparation and details (shoes, rings, etc). The couple will have a separate suite at Holiday Inn on Bloor Street and I'm hoping for a bright day around 11am

Ceremony:
Depending on where the ceremony will be held, your 24-105 F4 may not be a good choice. Most churches would not let you shoot with flash during the ceremony. The only time you can is during 'Bride Walking Down The Aisle', 'Exchange Of Vows', 'Ring Exchange', 'You May Kiss The Bride', 'Signing of Marriage Contract', then the Exit.

What I would do is mount 70-200 f2.8 IS on 5D2 with 550EX, then mount 16-35 on 7D

If it's outdoors, then your current setup is fine.

I went to the church one afternoon and there were plenty of lights from the windows so I think I could do without flash. I'll be at the rehearsal on Friday so I can ask the priest if flash is allowed. We'll be using the church's front steps and the courtyard for outdoor photos and I hope it'll be a bright cloudy day.

Bridal Shoot: Your current set up is fine. But I will probably use the Primes for some creative shots.

Group Shots: 24mm should be fine on 5D2, but for a bigger group, you may need 16-35

Ceremony: Your current set up is fine :)

Details: I am not sure what your plan is for details, i.e Rings
This is why I love using 24-70 F2.8, it has MACRO capabilities :)

my 2 cents anyway :)

I have a true macro lens (Sigma 105mm) but it's too slow. I'm thinking of renting a Canon 10-22mm EF which I've used before, it has a short focusing distance which is like less than a foot from the subject.

Thanks for your great suggestions! :)

Planning to use mostly prime lenses for the prep and the 16-35 for tight areas (prep). It's a hotel suite so I'm thinking big windows. The church size is average with lots of stained glass windows on the sides but it's all brown wood from what I can remember.

You should be able to shoot the whole wedding with just the 50. Your 85 is a bonus. ;-)

check with the priest whether he likes flash or not -- I ran into that issue a few times where the priest forbid the use of flash during the ceremony. If you don't think you'll need it, then your good to go.

The wedding went well. As for the photos, I haven't seen them yet but altogether, I took just over 1400 photos for at least 12 hours. I think I made the mistake of using the f4 lens, instead of the faster ones I had in my bag. I used the 16-35 2.8 and the 24-105 f4 at the church. The histogram on the f2.8 looks better than the f4.

the 5D is very forgiving with lots of RAW headroom....compared to the 7D. Don't forget working at 2.8....you have a larger chance of missing focus. Group photos are f5.6 to 8 anyways.

7D is great if you can get exposure down fine.
