my 2 cents.

I was interested in previous posts but after reading the pdf rules  .
Would have been easier if the organizers had a model release form signed upon registration of participants.

Since this is world, its like the UN. Let's say there are 30 guys photographing the event at any time, those same people will be hounding the participants (regardless of result) for model releases and top that with serious language barriers. Nightmare.

Would be nice to shoot this even for the experience at least. Simplify it imo.

Photo competition or not, is anyone planning on heading down? I'm thinking of going down maybe Wed or Thurs if anyone wants to hook up.

Carlton, I'd be down. What day were you thinking? Tuesday would be ideal for me.

Humm, I might be able to wing it on Tuesday. Let me confirm this with the boss tomorrow morning.

Looking at the schedule, Tuesday does look like the better day.

A fun event to cover if anyone is planning on going down. Nobody seemed to know where the designated photographers area was and a number of security folks said we could walk anywhere, including the main floor.

Later in the afternoon, we were stopped and asked for our media creds. We were told there were only 3 authorized floor photographers but we were free to roam anywhere else. That's just as well as having a general admission pass. I guess he was head of security. A bit disorganized if you asked me.

If you go, I hope you've got some fast lenses and/or good noise software. I was shooting at ISO6400 to get the shutter speed up to be able to stop the action. Those guys move FAST! The lighting is pretty crappy in that building.

There aren't a lot of crowds, mostly family and friends and officials from the respective competitors and the odd school group. I think it has the potential to be a lot bigger event but someone needs to get on the marketing bandwagon and spend some money promoting it properly.

Carlton: What kind of focal length and aperture were you using with that ISO 6400 to stop the motion? I was curious as to how far away you would be from the action and what kind of lighting there would be.

70-200mm is an ideal length to get a full body to 3/4 shot. You can get fairly close. It's held in the arena which is broken into 3 sections so you can move from one event to the other pretty easily. I was shooting with my 70-200mm f2.8 and 300mm f2.8 wide open at iso6400 @ 1/500 and 1/640. It's nice to shoot from the walkway railing but some security guards were pretty anal and quickly walked up and told me to find a seat even though there were hardly anyone near where I was. Noise Ninja is going to get a workout tonight when I start to edit.

The light is pretty much the same for the entire arena. What you don't notice is that is is constantly flickering. Some static stances etc you can get away shooting lower ISO.

Have fun.

Well I must say I'm a bit disappointed with someone named Kungfuwushu who used some of my images without my permission on the video they posted on YouTube. I did donate 4 images for the photo contest which I did give up rights for their usage but some of my other shots that I did not upload were lifted off Flickr or here. Tsk tsk tsk... shame on this guy.

Why don't you complain to utube. These days they are quick to censor if it involves a corporate interest.

I would just send them an invoice. Then send it to collections after 90 days.

I'm dealing with a similar issue myself. A racer used some of my shots on his web page without payment or attribution. Pretty sad when you see that three other photographers received credit for their work and I permit personal use free of charge, as long as the images are attributed.

I started out with an email detailing how he could "be brought into compliance with my licensing requirements"; pay for them or add proper attribution. No response to the email for more than a month. I followed that up with a registered letter including a copy of my original email, evidence that the images were in fact mine, and a bill for a rather modest $100.00. Still no reply. I'm giving him until the end of the month, then I'll have to decide how I'm going to proceed.

Most times I'm pretty flexible with the use of my images as long as I'm credited for it and it's for personal use ie. non advertising/media. This guy didn't even ask permission, he either lifted it off here or from my Flickr account. The guy is from France. It's the 3rd time I've had to deal with this kind of situation (at least that I know of).

Rule of thumb to live by is "If you don't want it stolen, don't post it on the internet" lol

Did you at least politely ask for attribution in your first email before going into the 'brought into compliance' legal language in the second?

I mean if you're bitter and legalistic about it that gives him a ton of time to just drag it out forever and cost you a pile of lawyer's fees harassing him (which you won't recoup)

As an aside roundabout route, issue a DMCA takedown notice to his service provider.

C, they definitely should give you a 5D mk2 and/or a $500 Henry's gift card for this! Super BS.

LOL, one of my friends pointed me out to the crazy French copyright laws which are UBER crazy strict. The French don't mess around with copyright infringements...

He speaks and reads English. In my previous email I had sent him links to the Canadian French version of the CC license.

How's your battle going Rob? Got confirmation that YouTube pulled the video due to copyright violations. The guy doesn't seem to have it on his website either. Hope your battle goes as smoothly.
