Hi,

I've heard a couple of rumors about what this will and won't work with:

ViewNX - buggy
Capture NX2 - yes
CS3 - Adobe won't support
CS4 - works fine, full Adobe support
latest PSE - ????

Has anyone heard anything else or have a good source? Are you planning to upgrade Friday or wait for the fallout?

CS3 - works fine, Adobe won't take your calls but then, who calls Adobe for anything?

...and ppl are looking to CS5 for something significant upgrade-wise, compared to CS4. It makes sense for Adobe to at least make an attempt to drag legacy users into the present, even if their most recent offering was a bit lackluster.

^^ its only $35 dollars...lol. You've probably spent more than that on memory cards for your camera..lol.

To the OP. I'd just wait and see what the reviews are like, before upgrading.

I always wait. I never buy the first iteration of any software or electronics, I'm just curious as to what others are planning.

I've already been using it for the last 2 weeks. Pretty stable, and with nice performance improvement across the board. 8)

one thing i like about Snow Leopard is that I gained about 6 gig of space once it was installed. whoever heard of an OS release that's actually smaller than its predecessor?

I'm running a 2GHz iBook, 4GB RAM and currently on OSX 10.4.11.

Is my ibook compatible with Snow Leopard and what differences/improvements can I expect if I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

TIA
Ken

well according to apple you should always upgrade and pay more money lol

other than 64bit conversion of native apps i didn't really see anything i want/need. probably will keep mine as is until an application i need requires the new OS.

I prefer not to base my decision on Apple's marketing information on their website. I'm looking for someone who's experienced with OS X to offer insight into what advantages Snow Leopard offers over my current version of OS X.

Thanks in advance.

if you bought a new system recently it's only $13...i think the wife will be ordering her copy soon

i've had it on for a few days now...finally anyway
spent 3 attempts going thru an already running system, but after getting shutdown three times i opted to try the "install from dvd" and things clicked
running cs3 and LR and have not noticed any issues there, but LaCie lightscribe labeler is no longer burns images, just one big black circle so i'll have to look at an alternative to that proggy i guess

i never had any stability issues with the old OS, nor did i run any "speed challenges" so how much faster this OS is i'll find out over time i guess

Lightroom is fine, quicksilver is having some issues it seems. Everything else seems to be running ok. I gained about 16gigs of HD space so thats something.

Ken i don't know what CPU is in your ibook you said 2Ghz, if its a power PC chip you can't install the new OS either way. Even if you could i don't know that it will really help you all that much to be honest. I install leopard on a mac of probably about your specs and it was a slow down, snow leopard even thought its faster on a new system might make a system a few years old slower instead.

So far i'm seeing things being a little faster but nothing mind blowing yet. I have to do some more tests with lightroom it might be running slower but i'm not sure why.

System: early 2009 mac pro, 6gig ram

Snow Leopard is only compatible with Intel based Mac, so your IBM PowerPC based iBook might be out of luck I am afraid.

Slightly OT, but where is a good place to buy a Mac Pro? If SL improved my two year old MBP as much as it did, I think it is time to ditch my desktop PC and complete the switch.

I bought a refurbished Macbook Pro from the apple website (can't buy them in-store) and saved some money there. I've had it just over a year and I'm really happy with it.

You actually only gained about 7gb of storage space, the rest of the "gained" is due to the new storage metric adapted by Apple. If you take a look at your entire HDD capacity, it'll now look in-line with the manufacturer's advertise size instead of the smaller number as it used to be..

I've always upgraded right away but I'm holding off til next year. I'm going to put a bigger drive in my MacBook Pro at that time. My MBP doesn't support native 64-bit so it won't make a huge difference on my Mac.

About the regained hard drive space, I'll likely not gain anything, aside from the new metric as Macworld pointed out the regained space is mostly printer drivers and I use an app to delete those I don't use already.

Snow Leopard won't install all makes of printer drivers by default unless you want them. It'll check for installed printers and only include those.

I'm sure apple will release fixes with new updates soon. Just like their iPhone firmwares, it takes a couple of them to fix any issues or lack of performance.

Personally, I have noticed that my MBP starts and shuts down a lot faster with SL and programs just seem "snappier".

Advantages? Mostly, it appears that this update is a major bug fix and re-engineering effort for stuff under the hood. After all, Apple marketed this as a "0 new features" release. The price does reflect this; at $29, it is really very little to spend on an OS update.

10.6.1 has just been released, so I guess for those who are worried about the usual 10.x.0 issues, the most glaring ones should have been fixed now.

I don't suppose you have time, but if you do, a very extensive review can be found here:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/20 ... x-10-6.ars
