Wouldn't be possible to see in digital in these vibrant colours and clarity without modern age digital technologies, can't say what exactly originals looked like, though. Haven't really heard of him before either.

They are three channel negatives with shifts in different objects (three channel negatives weren't shot simultaneously, thus the shifts in sky and water/foliage etc) which were digitally or manually fixed when being digitized.
In fact, the images went through a very sofisticated process, with a photographer doing colour correction based on his own taste, so I can't say this is exactly what they looked like, unless the photographer, who was correcting, lived through the tzarist era
