So... anyone want to guess how much the body will be? I'm thinking $12-$15K if Leica plans to compete with the DSLR market. If they have the mindset of it being a digital MF killer, I'm thinking $20K-$25K instead.

Leica + digital + autofocus ... man, what is this world coming to?!?

Interesting, but it's going to be ridiculously priced (rumoured pricing is in the 25,000-30,000 Euro range) and it fills a need that simply doesn't exist (or Mamiya would have sold buttloads of the much cheaper ZD DSLR which is the same basic idea in 645AF mount).

I'm laughing at the UI. It's almost entirely menu-driven, more so than any base-model DSLR is, and that's very much not a pro feature. The only physical controls appear to be Shutter, Shutter speed dial, rear control dial and 4 buttons for the menu system.

For that cost of the S2 body I could buy a very nice Mamiya 645AFD system with several lenses, a ZD back and have enough left over to rent a P45+ or P65+ back fairly often and be able to upgrade body and sensor independantly (which is a major advantage of MF Digital, you buy 1-2 bodies and buy or rent the MP you need, only when you need it).

Yeah, it looks like they are targeting the MF market rather than most current DSLR users.

It looks to me like they're trying what Mamiya tried with the ZD DSLR back in 2006 or so. Mamiya failed at a $12K pricepoint, I don't see Leica pulling it off at 3x the price unless someone else is also playing with S mount and I'm not talking PhaseOne's Partnership (which is little more than Leica helping PO with their new 645AFDII mount lenses in return for software and digital imaging technology).

I imagine this product came about after numerous focus groups consisting of people who buy $8000 Leica primes.

Yeah, I'll bet anyone who is waiting to buy the $10000 50/0.95 lens for their M8 is drooling at the prospect of owning an S2 as well, price be damned!

why on earth would you want one when canon has had one for years and Zeiss made one 3/4 of a stop faster where is the exclusivity when you you can buy the canon for a mere 57,000 yen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_speed#Fast_lenses

Where can you find a 50/0.95 for CAD$555? I haven't seen one go for less than $1000-.

Japan but that is an old price when the Yen was strong.

Interesting read at http://dfarkas.blogspot.com

It's barely larger than a D700. Scroll down a bit for the comparison pics.

Ah, those wacky RED folks! Did you notice the backpedaling on the user forums after the Nikon and Canon announcements? At first, RED was trumpeting their plan to redefine the still photography market with their "DSMC" (digital still/motion camera). Then Canon announced the 5D Mark II and caused a bit of consternation. Now RED is basically saying "ignore everything we said... the market has changed... we're going back to the drawing board...".

Maybe RED should concentrate on actually shipping the products rather than hyping them...

Leica S2 prices announced.

I think I can afford the battery charger.
