All of a sudden it's almost August and I'm about to send my son off to university with my current good-enough-for-what-he-needs 24" LED monitor. Looking to replace it with a (relatively) affordable 24" IPS.

I use this monitor for all my photo editing (and do all my own printing up to 13" x 19"), but more of the time on it is spent document editing (which I earn a living from), as well as web browsing and the occasional bit of gaming.

Would the wide-gamut U2410 drive me nuts the rest of the time, or is the SRGB emulation good enough and easy enough to manage? What else would I need to know in choosing between the two? Two new 24" monitors is not in the cards.

Based on your requirements and my cost preference I'd highly recommend the U2412M.
I just recently bought one of these bad boys as they were on sale for $299 and it has been the best screen investment I've made in a while.
The differences between the two monitors are quite minimal especially if you do not have one of greater spec sitting right beside it.
The colour contrast is better on the 2412M surprisingly.
It lacks in colour gamut by a fairly significant margin, but still outperforms the screen that you wrote this on (most likely) and will outperform just about all others in this price-range. It also features a 16x10 ratio at 1920*1200 which is fantastic.

One thing that I must say the dell website fails to show you in the images (but is hidden in the description) is the monitor stand that it ships with. The thing is fantastic. Smooth, easy to adjust and adjusts to some pretty awesome heights and angles.

To recap, I say get the U2412M, save yourself a few bucks and invest them in something else to help you work/play!

I agree, I have a U2412m and am very happy with it. It seems to be on sale right now for $330; less than the magical $299 it sometimes shows up for, but still not bad.

I have never used the 2410, but have noticed an incredible difference from the (older) LCD I had before, and even the monitors I use at work. I didn't think the 1920 x 1200 would be that big of a difference compared to 1920 x 1080, but I love the extra space for browsing the web, and giving me just that little bit of extra preview space in Aperture for viewing pics, etc. I primarily use the monitor for web development and photos, with heavy web browsing and minimal gaming.

Totally recommend this decision!

Thanks, guys! One of the plusses for both is not giving up my 1200 height - love that. Definitely leaning toward the 2412!

Great choice. I think you'll love it.
