Hi, all.

I just broke my 24-70L................ recently... T^T
And looking for a standard zoom lens for my 5d Mark2....

I was pretty satisfied with canon but there are lots of discussions for third party
alternatives from Tamron 28-75, Sigma 24-70 HSM and new tamron 24-70 VC.....

Some people recommanded me canon 24-105L but I really loved F2.8 lens, so
Still in dillema. ^^

What would you guys get, if U own a FF?

PS: Sometimes, I just want to go back to 7D................
That body with newer Af system + amazing sigma 17-50 OS....
this combination had got me lot of good pictures.

Tamron 28-75 is what I use and love. I believe someone is selling one here in the classifieds.

How does one 'break' a 24-70L?

When it comes to Nikon; I haven't used a Tamron/Sigma in a few years, but when I did use them, they were never as sharp as their Nikon couterparts. They were fantastic for the money, and just as sharp at f5.6 and up, but not as useful below, if you're picky about that kind of stuff.

I guess it all depends on your budget, if I'm not mistaken the 24-70 L II is more expensive than the 5D MKII. I would definitely look at all the options if I was in your position.

Trading "down" to a 7D and 17-50 might be a good option as it would probably mean minimal out of pocket expenses. If you know the strengths and weaknesses of your equipment you should be able to get the same quality shots out of any combination of DSLR/Lens, whether its a 5D,7D, or T1i.

You could always trade down to an etch-a-sketch and save some serious coin..

Sorry, I don't see any real value in selling off the 5D2 just to save some coin. I'd start asking why you are shooting in f2.8 so much? is it to get DOF that you are looking for, or just can't bump the iso/exposure to get the shot? Going to a 7D will kill off the DOF, and i found it wasn't as friendly in the low light and your forced to bump the iso to get the shot.

The Canon 24-70II is real nice, but a bit too much cash for what little improvement it gave over the Sigma or Tamron offerings. If you need to ask, then you don't need it.

I personally use the Tamron 28-75mm and it is a great lens and it is sharp and colours are great...but it does not have the focus speed that the Canon 24-70mm lens has. So if your just doing it as a hobby I would get the Tamron but if you do weddings or other professional work I would get another Canon 24-70mm lens.

The new 24-70 version 2 is very expensive so that may be a deterrent. Perhaps investing in another copy of the original 24-70 may be the path?

Sorry to hear about your 24-70L...if I was in your shoes, I'd look at a used 24-70 again, one can be had for about $1300 in the used market. I currently have a 24-105, but I'm actually now in the market for something faster and better in low light; looking at 16-35 or a 24-70 and selling the 24-105 to help fund one of those lenses. The 24-105 does the job, but if you want faster focus and better low light situations, I suggest those two lenses instead.

I can't speak for Tamron or Sigma's, I've been tempted, but find that if I wait and save enough, I could get a great Canon L lens that I would be very satisfied with.

My 2 cents

I love my 5D 24-105L combo, they are very reasonable used and I really find i don't need anything faster in a walkaround zoom. If i need faster, im reaching for a prime in m pocket(walk around remember), either 50 1.4 or 35 2. I've seen 24-105L's go as low as $800 before, quite a steal for the performance.
