One of the features of the 5D3 is the ability to do built in HDR as well as multi-exposures.
Here is a set that i took, hand-held which turned out pretty good. This is with no post processing at all.

Hmmm I don't know if it is enough to beat out the likes of photomatix though. Nice feature to have at the same time. How customizable is it?

Maybe not, but frankly, this is much better than most of the clown puke HDRs produced by most photomatix users. Yes, I know I'm generalizing. I also know there of course are photomatix users who use the software very effectively (we've seen some here) but the common denominator of what's produced with that tool and posted online is vile.

Definitely not photomatix, but it's better than nothing. Camera has a bunch of presets and you can make a photo pretty gawd aweful, but I was fairly impressed with this setting as a nice compromise.

does it save the in-camera HDR file as raw or only jpeg?

Dangit Dmitri, you took that question right out of my mind!

Just as JPG unfortunately. But you have the option of either keeping the source files (in raw) or deleting them. What I do is choose the option to keep all files, but the in-camera processing at least gives me a good idea at what the HDR might look like and whether to expand or change my exposure range for when I process at home.

Would be nice if it was saved in raw format, otherwise I don't see any benefit of it personally. I'm sure the travel photographers would use it a lot

Think about it though, raw only comes from an actual sensor, HDR, produced in camera or on a computer is a by product of original sensor data.
I am not aware of cameras that create raw files without pressing the shutter button.

So you want the camera to store a RAW, PROCESSED file?

okay.
