So, I bought a used 85mm f/1.8 lens the other day off craigslist.

It has a little dust in it, but it was a good price. I tested it pretty thoroughly in and around the shop we were sitting at. It was sharp, as expected and the AF focused right on.

I'd shot some portraits and various other things, but now, a few weeks later, I went to shoot outdoors and found it does not focus to infinity!

the infinity mark on the lens actually focuses only about 100 feet away, and at f/1.8 that makes infinity still pretty blurry!

Never would have thought to test that.

Any ideas on a fix? Heard of this before?

I didn't think it was possible for this to happen without disturbing the lens mount, Perhaps there is a loose element inside, but it seems odd since it focuses great at every other range.

Ah, well...

It might help if you better clarify which lens.

Canon or Nikon? If multiple versions of the lens, which one?

Sorry, its the Nikon 85mm AF-D.

The problem isn't really brand speficic, though.

This is why I buy things new.. You never know what is wrong with the lens.. unless you really tryout the lens on the spot with the owner of the lens.. good luck with your repairs!! let us know!
